Subscribed, I'd love to get rid of the crome on the top of my mirrors, I'd rather they were just black, and they reflect light off of the inside of the mirror directly into my eyes with night driving. Anoying to say the least. Black would also make the elephant ears I wanted stick out a little less.
I think the crome on the mirrors are just a cover over the black plastic but I don't want to go prying them off if there isn't anything under them.

You could use plasti dip on them. No prep work required, other than masking. And if you hate it, it peels right up. Pretty slick stuff.

Paint it or look for FX2/FX4 replacement parts as they are all body colored. Main reason I went with my FX4. I hate chrome.

Painting on Chrome is somewhat of a pain, so just get some paint adhesion enhancer (almost a spray adhesive feel) to make it stick to Chrome. Also score it a lightly with fine wet sandpaper.

Now the factory crome on the top of the mirrors almost looks like they are just caps over the basic tow mirrors. Anyone try to remove them instead of painting? I love and need tow mirrors but the crome on the top I disslike and really makes the dumbo ears stick out even more.

I know this is a bit of an old thread but... I am working on blacking out my badges now. I have removed the fender badges so far, I am still cleaning up the tape. what I plan on doing is sanding them down a bit using a etching primer and doing 3-5 coats of flat black. I figure if this doesnt work I am grabbing some black 06 emblems from eBay. as far as the bumpers. I HATE chrome bumpers. I have never had to deal with them till now. what is a good way to do them? I want to do the cap and bumper in flat black. I dont want a temp solution as I don't like chrome. any ideas?

Do what I talked about with Paint Adhesion Enhancing spray and some etching with wet sandpaper and your chrome problems will go away. Otherwise, the other solution is to have a place strip the chrome off by dipping it and leaving you with bare metal to paint. But that is pricey.

im wanting to go flat black so I was thinking of just using a wire wheel and roughing up the whole thing and spraying it or a buddy of mine has some military CARC paint in black so i may just try brushing that on he says it can go on over the chrome and will basically eat what ever finish is under it be it chrome or paint. it is the stuff they paint tanks with.

I'll toss out an idea:
-My truck is Candy red with black and chrome door handles and bumpers.
-I have the tow mirrors and they are all black on my XLT.
-I'd like chrome on the top, I think it would look good.
-I think they pry off.
-I'm open to a trade if this can work.
-If someone can confirm?

all vehicles in the military are painted with CARC paint not just tanks while it does adhere very well to most surfaces a surface like chrome will still need to be prepped or it will most likely chip and flake off in a matter of time
