Tail lights

I did some searching but I'm just verifying everything i'm working on doing the nightshades on my rear lights and i would like to get as much of a gloss as i can with out taking them to a pro to have the clear coat put on. question one is store bought rattle can clear coat really that bad? Question two how many and how heavy of a clear coat do you want to put on? Final question after the clear coat is dried what rubbing compound do you use exactly? I thought i saw a post that the guy showed what he used but i couldn't find it. Also if i don't use a clear coat and just spray them and wet sand them can you still use a rubbing compound to bring out the shine or does that have to be on the clear?
