painting rims

I want to paint my rims blacks (they are chrome now). I just got a estimate and it will be 400 to paint all rims and i dont really have that kind of money. Is it possible for me to paint them and do a professional job without powdercoating?

It's all in the prep, especially with chrome.

x2 like have them sandblasted if at all possible. Very minimum some heavy grit sanding with a sander and dont take the easy route scuff it all. Put the work in the prep you will come out all right.

Better the prep the better the job....got to get the chrome off the wheels or at least scuff the surface real good or it won't stick right.

If they're chrome you either need to pay to get them sandblasted first or use the chemicals that take off the top chrome layer.

Not sure if this will work (ie not sure if it's the same type), but it may be worth a shot:

Or just buy a wire cup brush drill attachment and go to town. Be sure to use a high-quality adhesion promoter and clear coat after your base coat.

I just sanded the crap put of them and then put 2 coats of auto primer, then like 4 coats of black, then 2 coats of clear and they've done pretty good. The toughest part is getting that outside lip of the wheel. This is where a really good tape job would help. If I redo them I'll prolly take them off the truck when I do it too because that will make it easier and more uniform.

I've also heard of the oven cleaner method, though you have to be careful for how long you leave it on, since apparently, it can start to pit the metal if left on for too long.
