removing emblem overlay

So I have a patriot decals overlay on my tailgate oval and decided i need to paint my oval black to get rid of the chrome outline.. Obviously I'm going to need a new overlay. Would it be straight to just paint right over my existing overlay or should I remove it? And if so... do they just peel right off?

IMHO, you should definitely peel it off. You don't want to paint over that. It may take a little to get it going...try using a hairdryer to get it warmed up. Then, when it's off, try using an adhesive remover to get the residue off. I'm not sure what the emblem on your truck is made of, but if it's plastic, make sure the adhesive remover you use is safe for plastic.
