hid and halogen

ok so the other night i was driving home and had a new body style 04-05ish f150 coming at me with blinding hids, i flashed him and a second later they were regular halogen bulbs. how is this possible, i have been trying to come up with a way to do this for a while, i can figure it out electrical wise, but how is it possible to have two different bulbs in the same headlight housing?

Most hi/lo HIDs bulbs are actually HID lo beam with a normal halogen high beam. Quite common actually. But most people prefer to upgrade to the bi-xenon HIDs.
