Painting bed toolbox & running boards?

I currently have a chrome diamond plated tool box in the bed of my truck. I was wondering if anyone has or would know if its possible to paint it. I think as long as I rough it up with some sand paper I should be able to get it to adhere well. I was sort of thinking about doing black rhino liner type spray over it so it holds up and wont just get scratched and chipped up, exposing the chrome. If this is possible I was thinking about doing the same thing to my running boards to make them not slick in the snow/rain and so they match the black theme as well.

2005 Fx4 5.4L v8 Dark Charcoal Grey

Tell me what you guys think. Any suggestions or help would be most helpful

I wouldn't trust just using sandpaper. I highly recommend getting them sandblasted so anything you put on them adheres properly. Better to do it right the first time rather than waste money having to redo it later.

Here's how I did my steps:

are you sure its chrome an not just aluminum diamond plate??

either way you can have it lined or powdercoated. all the black ones that are sold is an aluminum box that gets powder coated. if it is infact chrome it will need to be sandblasted before lining or coating but just aluminum your good. the shop will be able to take care of it. i think i got quoted 150 to do inside and out in liner

Here is how I painted my running boards:

After nine months they have held up well. I had some initial rock strikes on the passenger side in the first week which took off some paint, but I have not had any since that time. They are both scuffed from shoes, but nothing that is really noticable. Overall, I would give the project a B for looks and durability.

Your side steps look nice man!!! I am really wanting to do like Rhino liner type coating over my side steps as well as my toolbox. Have you had any experience spraying that stuff on? I have seen a lot of people do bumbers and grill guards and what not but I was hoping it would work on my side runners and tool box as well.

I used the Duplicolor Truck Bed Coating ($8.99 a can at my local auto parts store) on the bumpers of my son's jeep and it worked very well. I used two cans to do the bumpers and the front brush gaurd. It covered up some of the imperfections in the bumper and it gave it a durable rough coating. I have not tried the Rhino liner, but it is probably similar to the consistency of the truck bed coating.

I think KR-Texas pretty much has you covered on the running boards. As for the toolbox, it is more than likely aluminium. If that is the case then you will first need to use a self etching primer. Paint will not adhere well to aluminum. Self etching primer can be found at the auto parts store in a rattle can.
