My regular SS bulbs were in almost a year before I switched them for Ultras. Here is how they came out looking:

Here is the new Ultra going in:

I've heard the regulars lasting from a couple months to more than a year. The Ultras are supposed to last longer. I have HIDs now

There's nothing wrong with the bulb you removed. Look at any halogen bulb that has a good number of hours of operation on it and you will see the same. It's what happens in the Halogen Cycle. During my 10 years as an engineer for both Philips and Sylvania. I had the opportunity to look at many thousands of halogen lamps.

You should keep that one handy in the event your new one fails.

I have had two sets of Silver Stars....and they have both had problems for instance...one pair only one side burned out and then on the second pair the high beam burned out...

Just went with DDM 55W 6000k Lights : )

I have had SS's in 4 cars/trucks now...and they have all lasted 2-3 years...
bulbs are fragile and they just blow sometimes...even worse in extreme hot/cold
1 of my FX4 stock fogs burned out at about 15,000 miles...it just happens
also had a stock headlight pop out on a ranger I had with less than 20k...

so you could spend $10 for a replacement bulb..$20 for a SS
or $50-$150 per bulb for HID lights that all could burn out at anytime...
also with the HID's you have more wire/balasts/parts to fail besides the bulbs...
not to mention the possibility of blinding others and getting hasseled by local cops...

just my 2 cents...

so is it worth pulling the new bulbs out of my new ride and replacing with Silverstars?

I don't think I'm gonna worry with HIDs yet

I just found this site and it's been 6 or 7 years since I've modded any of my rides... good lord the options are crazy now!

I gotta replace a bulb in the old lady's four runner, I told her to go ahead and get a set of silverstars and I'll put em in

Does anyone know how much brighter the Silverstar Ultra's are vs the Silverstars? Like I said, the Silverstars I have now are brighter and whiter than OEM but since I put smoked clear Lightning like heads in (and thinking the adjustment of them is close) the lights look less bright. Maybe Ultra's will kick it up a notch.

I thought the ultras were really similar in brightness but meant to be longer life. I notice a nice difference between the SS Ultras and the stock bulbs, tho it's subjective.

^ That's what the packaging implies, and what I'd read a bit ago. They were more to improve on the life of the regular SS's. I personally didn't notice a difference in color or brightness in both a 9006 and 9005 bulb.

Granted, I've seen pictures here of people doing side by sides, and the Ultras seem to be "bluer/whiter" than the regulars.

I can't really tell a difference between SS and regular.

not sure about Ultra's but the SS's are way whiter and a little brighter than stock...
It made a big difference because I put SS's in heads and fogs...
I can really see the difference when driving under street lights which are very yellow...
with factory bulbs the lights were almost the same yellow...

No doubt the SS's are better than stock but I'm thinking my smoked heads were killing a bit of brightness off maybe the ultra's were a bit brighter. I'm not going to worry about it then if there's no difference. I just have to figure out the correct way of adjusting the heads so they sit exactly where they're supposed to- got em close now but they still seem off.

Wouldn't you know it, my Silverstar light burned out today, so I bought Ultra's and adjusted again my headlights to match the factory adjustments on the stock light housings. So far the adjustment is a winner but we'll see tonight.
