Just had a brain flash... what do ya' think ???

Okay, so I posted about how Hella sent me some brand new headlights, after the first ones started peeling... {crazing ?}

But they let me keep the old ones ! Now, I was sitting here thinking that I bet I could sand off the peeling surface of those bad ones, with like 1000 grit... then 2000 grit, then polish them out.....

And then.... and here's the "big idea" I could try some of that tint spray stuff on them. That might protect, and prevent the refinished surface from peeling again.... Or, it might not. But who cares, I'd have to brand new ones as a back up anyway.

I'm just thinking that the blackout headlights, with a medium tint over them, might look pretty cool on my blacked out truck.... for however long they last. What do you think ?

Peace,
Fish

PS, Also, lets say I did this, and they looked great for 6 months, and then started to screw up {maybe I could re-do them} but even if not, I'd have extended the life of the new ones I just put on, by 6 months.... which would be good, as I'm really concerned that a year from now, those will start peeling too

I think it would look good with your truck. You could probably get away with it as long it was just lightly tinted. Even if the local yocals give you some hassel you would still have the other to put back on. Nothing really to lose since you got new ones so I'd try it!

Can you separate them like the oem ones and do the DIY painted backing? You could then seal them up real good.

Now there's an idea....

Hey TruckGuy, you do mean, open them up and spray the tint spray stuff on the inside of the lens, rather than on the outside, right ? ....because of course the part that surround the chrome reflector bowls, is already black, instead of chrome like the OEM's anyway.

Now, if I did that, it would certainly protect the tint spray, as it would not be directly subjected to weather, bugs, sand / gravel blasting, etc.... not to mention that if I sprayed them on the inside, the outside would look flawless and glossy, like they were factory made.......
.....But then again, given the history of these lights, if I could get the peeling surface all sanded off, and buffed out to glossy, crystal clear, I was thinking, the tint spray might actually help to protect the plastic lenses from peeling again ?

Hmmmm.

First, I guess I need to see if I can sand these lights off, and buff them back to glossy... then, if so, I can decide what to do from there.

Will post updates.

Peace,
Fish

Tint them then add HID kit to shine enough light through them so the tint didnt make a difference.

I gotcha Fish. I see exactly what you are trying to do now.
