Silverstar Ultra question
Silverstar Ultra question
Quick question...
I have the regular Silverstars in my heads & fogs, but one of the fogs went out tonight.
Do they make the Ultra (apparently lasts longer?) for our fogs, or heads for that matter yet? If not, I could have sworn someone figured out a way to modify the grommet or something to make them fit... but I can't find that thread with search (or I could be crazy).

Here's what the Sylvania website says:
2005 FORD F150:
High & low beam headlamp
H13 (9008)
H13ST Silverstar High Performance Lighting: The Whiter and Brighter Halogen
H13XV XtraVision Halogen - The Brighter Light
Fog/Driving light
9145
9145ST Silverstar High Performance Lighting: The Whiter and Brighter Halogen
2003 FORD F150:
High & low beam headlamp
9007
9007SU Silverstar ULTRA for Ultra Night Vision - The Whitest and Brightest Halogen
9007ST Silverstar High Performance Lighting: The Whiter and Brighter Halogen
9007XV XtraVision Halogen - The Brighter Light
9007CB Cool Blue Halogen - The Whiter Light
It looks to me like they do not offer an "ULTRA" 9008 bulb or a 9145 "ULTRA" bulb. As you can see, they do offer an "ULTRA" bulb for the 9007 bulb.
The modification you are thinking of is putting a 9005 bulb (which I am fairly positive comes in an "ULTRA") into the fog lights. However... the 9005 is a higher wattage bulb. Many people have successfully put 9005 bulbs in their fog lights with no problems, but some have had issues with the lens being slightly burned. I believe this problem occurs more often in the "round" fog lights in the 2006 and up F-150's. Also, the 9005 bulb has a significantly shorter life span because it is actually meant to be the "bright" bulb in a 2 headlight system and thus is higher wattage.
Hope this helps!

Ahh Tx, that was the modification I was thinking of, and now that you said it I do remember people saying the 06 fog light was prone to the burning, but not the 05.
Wasn't there something though about having to cut one of the tabs off or something so it would actually fit into the house?
Might just be better off getting another regular if the shorter lifespan theory is correct.

You have the rectangle fogs. You should be fine with the 9005s.
You gotta also remember, the Ultras are supposed to have a longer life span than the regulars. So it might balance out, if 9005s do indeed have a shorter life span than 9145s.
Some say you have to cut the tab on the 9005s (I had to) but some have been able to squeeze them in w/o cutting anything.

That's true, no one that I have seen has reported melting, burning, etc. w/ the rectangular lights. However, even the ULTRA 9005's will have a shorter life span than the regular 9145's. If you don't use your fogs much, it shouldn't be an issue. Also, you will notice quite a difference in brightness between the 9145's and the 9005's. Basically, the 9005's are VERY bright. Don't be surprised when oncoming traffic flashes you. You could probably aim the fogs down slightly and avoid the flashing though.
Elvato is right... For some reason, some people have had to trim one of the tabs and others have been able to squeeze it in. More than likely, it just depends on how hard you're willing to push!
Also, you can look up online the difference in lifespan between the 9145 and 9005. If I remember correctly, it was a fairly large difference.
