Question Painting over Chrome???

I want to have my bumpers painted to match my truck, and was wondering if anyone has ever painted over chrome like this?
Thanks

Wont work. Paint needs to "etch" into whatever surface it is applied to so it can stick. Chrome is too smooth and although you can actually apply paint over chrome, it will peel off after curing. I would suggest swapping Bumpers with someone who has Painted ones and wants Chrome.

I was thinking of sanding down the bumpers and then hitting it with a self etching primer first before the paint

That would probably work for a couple years, your best bet would be getting prepainted bumpers, or getting the plating media blasted off your existing bumpers. Well worth the cost becuz with proper care will never peel.

thats what I did, but only as a temporary fix for a year, the right way to do it is have it sandblasted and then let a bodyshop paint it

I have access to a sandblaster, but it is starting to sound like it is more work involved than I originally thought. Guess I should find some one with painted, or black bumpers that wants chrome.
thanks

i would leave them chrome on your truck but that is my opinon. with the colour of your truck and the lights you have installed along with that grill and wheels the chrome looks good . besides chrome is a lot easier to take care of then the peeling paint that will occur over time with any painted bumper whether it's factory or repainted.

I had a body shop sandblast and d/a sand my bumpers. Then they used a self etching primer and then painted, clearcoated and color sanded them.
They are holding up good.

Well,I paid $400 but this guy always does work for me pretty cheap.I've sent him several customers over the years.I had to remove the bumpers, take every thing off them and bring them to him and I installed them afterwards. He also sprayed my FX2 lower valance for $25 because he still had paint and clear left over from painting my bumpers.I'd say i got a killer deal.
I can't remember who it was but I recall reading a thread a while back where someone paid $700 to have their chrome bumpers blasted and painted.
