CA tint
Windshield is illegal to tint in all 50 states, fronts not sure, go to autozone and find a roll of film, look at the back of the box it has the % laws on it, or find it on w/e that one site was, tint.com or something like that.
This website says "Must allow more than 70% of light in" for front windows in CA:

.. but the California Highway Patrol website says "no tint"....

from the website:
Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?
The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:
The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.
The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.
However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.

don't drive like a ****...if you get pulled over put your windows down immediately. Also, as long as you don't go straight limo on the fronts...you don't really need to worry in most cases. I hardly ever put mine down when I see cops. I have medium on my f150 fronts, and dark on my focus.

I did 5% all around on my truck ignoring the laws, I unbelivably passed inspection with my front windows down lol
Although some cops have checked out my truck before, its impossible to see into my front windows, and impossible to see through at night, sure cuts down on ppl riding ur *** with high beams though, but when i fail inspection next time i'll tear the fronts out and squeegie up 20%

I have in the past, written tickets for the windshield only because it is stupid to tint that IMO and at night it makes seeing hard, not to mention it violates CA VC 26708. Side windows is kinda iffy with me depends on how your driving and if I have a second PC (probable cause) to light you up....
I would say no less then 35% and you should be fine as long as your not actin a fool!
Most of CHP will light you up based on how your driving, what kinda car you have and if they feel they can find something else on your car to write up. They give no love, not even to there own brothers or sisters. but laws apply to EVERYONE.
Newer cars these days are comming with tinted side front windows, which makes it not the owners fault for getting a ticket, but should make it dealers burden. not the case in one case that was filed.... see below.
A traffic ticket was contested a few months back and one of the items was tinted windows. The owner contested he bought the car from a used car dealer and the dealer add the tint the car. 0% on rear side and rear window. 0% side front windows. The court found the ower liable because the DVM drivers hand book (introduced by the proscution) says "....the front sided windows have to be free and clear from any obstruction...." now that owner took a heavy loss because he had to pay to have the tint removed, incurred court costs, got the book thrown at him for the tinted windows along with other items.
Id second rolling the windows down, and change the windows control in your truck to the one click roll down. That might save you a bit, but in the end you run the risk of getting cought at some point. You have to weigh if its worth it to hit your pocket book!
sorry for the long reply.
