Tonneau Cover

Hi, I currently have a cap on my truck and I really don't like the looks of it in summer, even though it is very handy at times. I was thinking of making my own cover out of plywood or vinyl that is flush with the box rails. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how they did it, or what people have to say about their soft tonneau covers. I want something that is secure when I need it to be, and as cheap as I can. Any ideas of thougts are appreciated.

They sell the ones that are flush with the bed rails...they are metal and fiberglass i beleive...WAY better than ply wood...that would most definately warp and sag....My buddy has a soft cover that looks real nice...I cannot think of the brand, but i'm sure someone will chime in..It is the one that doesn't have snaps, but it has a plastic channel all the way around, that you tuck under. Never had a problem with 'people' getting in it either..

I just purchased a Rollbak retractable cover. It's on sale from the manufacturer for a little over 800.00. Not cheap, however it offers the best of everything. It is strong enough to hold two guys on top of it. It can be retracted all the way, or every 12" so you can actually haul tall stuff in the bed without having to remove and put the hardtop cover somewhere. You can lock your tailgate and thus lock up anything stored inside the bed. It sits flush with the bed and mounts inside the bed, so there's nothing above the bed height. You can keep your bed rails or any other rack system as well as use your bed rail cutouts and hooks. To me, this cover offers the best of everything with little or no negative aspects accept for the cost. But, you get what you pay for.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, I just want a cheap way to keep my stuff secure and dry. I only plan on owning this truck for another 2 years at most, and I already have a nice truck cap that I will put back on for the winter and when I need to haul bigger things securly. I just want a quick and easy cover that is smaller than the huge cap and looks better for in the summer. I also may want to put a quad or a bike in the back so I would like it to come off and store away easily. I might just throw my tool box in and forget about the cover. Anyway, thanks again.

Look at the Extang RT cover. While it is vinyl, it is somewhat secure when the tailgate if locked. $300.00 shipped from autoanything.com. Someone would pretty much have to cut it to get to the bed easily. I would not keep guns, gold, or other valuables under it, but good enough for the golf cussin' sticks or a power tool or two.
