I wonder...
Hey guys, here's a thought for all the guys (and gals) who have the 5-speed manuals and captains chairs...if you don't like the way the shifter looks because its so long, would it be possible to install an expedition center console, cut out a hole in the square area (where the coin holder is), put the shifter through the hole, and cover the hole with some leather or whatever?? Am I making any sense? I think it would look a whole lot better with the shifter on a console and more sporty looking...just a thought.
I was thinking of doing the same thing but I don't know if there would be enough space for the shifts. There is only one way to find out though! You do it first and tell me how it goes!
Hey I just noticed your from San Jose also!

I am going to guess that just by removing the coin holder thing you won't have enough room. Try measuring the difference in shifts. You will probably find it quite significant. At one point on my 98 I was working on making a custom console for in front of the seat, but found that the distance the shift lever moved was os large, I would have to cut such a large hole for the lever that there was no use in the console itself.

What about altering the shift lever to accomodate the size of the hole in the console? I think if you cut and/or bend it, you will change "throw" of the shift.
Just a thought. Dennis

It would definately have to have a pretty big hole in it to accomodate the movement of the shifter. Certainly it can be done. I would first check to see if the aftermarket makes a short throw shifter for your truck. The shorter the throws, the smaller the hole you'll need.If you start trying to bend the shifter it won't work because the shifter moves in more than one direction. You can bend it to work in one direction but it won't work in the other direction....
