How bright is too bright?
Hi,
I am about to install Xenon 9007 bulbs in my headlights and 9005 bulb replacements in my fogs. My question is if anyone else has done this? What is the result? I want brighter lights (mostly because I drive on some pretty dark roads), but I also do not want to be overly obnoxious regarding other drivers (or our friendly local police for that matter
).
Thanks in advance

Wait till the police take notice and just say, hey man, the fog lights are the same as always. Those Xenon bulbs are not actually brighter, they just shine a different light and therefore appear brighter in my opinion. I used to have a truck accy shop in Ca. and sold millions of those bulbs! Some customers even brought them back because the factory lights were better, especially on newer Honda Civics.

It did the same on mine. 80/100 9007's and 9005's for the driving lights. Don't worry, they're not all that much brighter. Some say they're no brighter all, just a differnt color light.
By the way, I don't know what truck you have, but the 9145's are what's in the driving lights, but you can't find them in Xenon. I used 9005's or actually I think I used 9006's, the low beam. ANyhow, they don't fit. You have to do some major grinding in the bulb/base to make it fit. The tab's that lock it in ar different, you can grind them off to modify them enough to fit, but the hardest part is the base which is to big around so you have to grind it down on all sides until it fits. It's about 1mm all the way around. It's a pain....but mine fit tight and so far so good. You definetly need a grinder.

The 9005 has the same base as the 9145, no cutting or grinding required. If you can find the 9005 in a halogen it is a great improvement to the driving/fog lights. I did it and it seems that they are low enough in the bumper that they do not affect anyone else driving in front of you and the lens spreads the light differently than if they were in a headlight. The 9006 in the low beam bulb for a 4 headlight setup; the 9005 is the high beam bulb for a 4 headlight setup. i think they are 50 watts(9006) and 65 watts(9005) each. The 9006 has two ridges on the base that slides into the wire harness and the 9005 only has one and it is exactly the same as the 9145 witch is the stock driving/fog light bulb. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the replies...
One more question, is there a difference in the connectors between the Expy and the F150 that would explain the problems that FamilyRide encountered? Is it a generic model year difference? Or is it just another one of those phenonmenon that are completely unexplained?
By the way, FamilyRide -- how long did it take to do the whole Fog Light job (just in case I am blessed with the same challenges you had)? Thanks!

Cyclone, I just did this mod yesterday. 9005 halogen bulbs bought at NAPA made by Federal/Mogul. Drivers side fit right in no problem. Passenger side tabs were a little offset from the OEM's. No problem. Just started the two tabs that lined up and turned about a 1/2" until the third one fell into it's slot and finished twisting. Took all of 4 minutes. No grinding required. Maybe the 9006's are different. Tip: Turn the wheels all the way left to do the passenger side and vise-versa. Fog lamps are much brighter. I'm going to do the fog lights with parking lights on only mod as soon as it gets above 39 degrees here. Good luck. P.S. Family Ride Love that color!!

Thanks for the tips ScrewKing! I'll probably be doing these mods this week. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I did the foglight change and I didn't have to do any grinding... I have an EB 2000. Look in the online store and you should be able to pick up the bulbs in there... I think I paid 40.00 for them but if I saved a few hours grinding, then it was worth it. The color is more on the bluish side rather than yellow like the stock. If you change the headlights, then you might as well change the fog lights because they won't match and will look stupid. I got the 85/100 watts for the headlights and I've never had a problem with the other drivers... the previous post was correct, the lights are aimed lower so that they don't cause a problems with other drivers. I also have the clear corner lamps, The bulbs were also from the online store... they look blue but when they are on, they are definately yellowish. I guess this is ok because I'm a little more compliant with the DOT regs for the amber in the lens. Family ride is 100% correct... the clear corner lamps look awesome if you have a white truck.
