Post Window tinting

I read that someone in here thought that the legal limit for the front windows is 35%. I am state inspection certified in TX and if you look in the S.I. book it will tell you that the front side windows must not be less than 20%. The rear windows can be as dark as you want them to be but you must have at least two rear view mirrors that can see clearly for a certain distance. What I mean is that you can have your back glass painted black but you can no longer consider your interior rear view mirror as one of the legal mirrors. So you can have one outside mirror and the interior mirror but the rear window can no longer be darker than 20%. I have gone to tint shops myself and they have told me the same thing about the 35%. That is usually because the next level down tint that they have is either 20% or less and once you put that on your window it will be illegal because of the tint your window has in it from the factory.

Great information, I appreciate it. Even with two outside mirrors, it can be difficult to back up safely at night with a fairly dark back window!

Yeah, I was gonna say, wouldnt two outside mirrors be sufficient? I think I read it right but didnt you say that two mirrors have to be able to see clearly for a certain distance? I know this has nothig to do with tint perhaps but how about a semi? Myabe I am just being dumb here but a lot of trucks without a sleeper have a window on the back just like a pickup. These do not have an interior mirror just the two outside mrrors. These two mirrors dont show nearly as much as a pickup window. what are the rules there? any idea? They probably have different rules for commercial vehicles, I know that tint is not allowed at all on big trucks.

You do have to have a different certification for commercial vehicles and I don't have it so I can't tell you the truth about that. If you really want to know about that I can start to look into it for you.

Thumbs up

I've got 5% on my sides and 2-1/2% on the back. now THAT's dark.
It's a pain in the butt to back up, but i can just open the slider. When when my canopy's on, that's a whole different game. lane changing is really hard cause of the glare.
Had the tint for a few years now...no tickets for it yet. been pulled over for other things but the cops never said anything about my tint.
