Question Help: Rearview Mirror Removal

I just received a new billet rearview mirror, however, I can't figure out how to remove the stock mirror. There seems to be a cover that covers the screw and I don't have a clue as to how to remove it. I don't want to break it. Any ideas?

I assume you are referring to the mirror on the windshield. I watched a guy put in a new windshield and he used a screw driver to release a clip on the bottom of the part of the mirror support that touches the windshield. He released the clip and the mirror assembly slid up and off the part that is glued to the glass. The new windshield already had the mounting piece glued on.

T,

That is exactly what I am talking about So the bottom part as to be popped off with a screw driver, I will have to check that out. I just don't want to scratch the mirror or worse break the windshield.

I took mine off to get the windshield tinted. It is tough to get off, but possible. There isn't a set screw or a cover to be popped off in these new mirrors like you are thinking Harley. They are one solid piece. What you really need to get it off is a hook pic. The bottom of the mounting base has a small access area. Inside that base is a spring clip that locks onto the piece glued to the windshield. You need to put something between the glass and the pic to not crack it. I used a plastic body filler applicator. Slide that on the glass up to the bottom of the mirror base. Stick the hook pic in the bottom of the mirror and feel around for the spring clip. The clip will release when pulled away from the glass. When you feel it release, wiggle and pull the mirror assembly up towards the roof.

That is about the best I can describe it. Good luck!!

Boss,

Thanks very much for the info. It sounds like it might be a pain just to change mirrors. Now I have to decide if it is really worth it.

Harley,

If you do all your own work on you bike, this will be a snap for you. It's only a spring clip in there. The key is to release the clip without putting any prying pressure on the glass. The piece of plastic and hook pic works perfect. You don't need to move it much. I sctoch taped the plastic on the glass to free up a hand to pull on the mirror as I released the clip.

Take a close look at it from the outside of your windshield. If you can climb over and stick your nose to the glass in front the mirror, you will see the clip in question. Once you see what it looks like, you will get it off no problem.
