Whistling Billet Grill
Just installed a billett grill on my 2001 SuperCrew 4X4. Looks great, but at 60-70MPH it makes this high pitched whislting sound. Drives me crazy.
Anyone experience the same?

Got the whistle here, too.... Sucks because I spent a lot of time soundproofing.
Go figure.

What company did you get your billet grill from that it would make a whistling sound, and was it self installed or done by a shop?
Just got my Steel Horse Billet grill in, and will have it installed by a bodyshop that is currently doing some work on my truck (see http://www.superlink.net/~spartan ) to see why. Anyway, most people seem to recommend Steel Horse.

Well, it is a bit off subject -- but it was I would guess a 30mph collision and I was wearing my seat belt which worked perfectly,
I didn't even lean forward at all, the seat
belt gave me a good bruise on my chest, but
I didn't lunge forward as some would think.
Well, maybe I would have if I didn't get hit
with the air bag, but still... it's not a big fluffy pillow like they'd like you to believe -- could you imagine one going off at the wrong time by defect or whatever?
Ouch! I hope they professionally clean the inside of the truck when they reset the airbags, because it lets out a huge cloud of dust and a nasty jet-fuel smell.
BUT ANYWAY, how about them billet grill noises? Just a fluke for a couple people?

I just ordered my new steering wheel and im having my passenger side airbag taken out. I dont want it killing my wife or my kid. I think i will get a cd changer and mount it in the empty space where that punching bag was.
I am also interested in the billet grille for my truck. Saw one on the other day on a buddies ride and fell in love. I have truck envy now. But i remember reading somewhere that the TRENZ brand one that the site sells has more horizontal bars than others. Anyone have any info on that? Sorry kinda long and i didnt mean to start another topic at the same time.

The grill I have on is from TREX and it was installed by the shop that I bought it from.
The installation looks clean, the only thing that I can see wrong is that it touches the bottom of the front moulding that covers the front end. The top part has about .25" clearance.
There might not be enough horizontal stabilization causing the bars to vibrate.
I am going to tape up the front and drive it to see if I can isolate the source.

This may be a little off subject, but did your airbag do that to your face? I have been toying with the idea of putting in one of those billet steering wheels because they look super sweet, but didnt want to lose my airbag. I have just reconsidered. I will take my chances with the aluminum steering wheel. I have been in alot of accidents with no air bag and came out looking alot better than you do in that picture my friend. Good luck to you and your truck.
Best wishes,
NH Cruiser.

Spartan,
I think a lot of us would be interested in the circumstances of your accident. Did you have the seat belt on ? What speed prior to impact etc. Realize you may not want to go into detail. Glad injuries/ damage weren't any worse. Best of luck ...

Reading an older topic, also titled whistling billet grill (or something similiar), I believe someone said that the
noise comes from the rubbing of the grill
against the molding, the grill should be
fastened on tightly, just not rubbing up
against the molding, hope that helps.

My Stull grill is in rock solid also. In fact, I tied a nylon cord to the grill and had someone pull the grill VERY tight up against the shell before I rivited it in place. Mine is VERY tight against the grill shell molding. No whistling noises. No noises at all...
TampaBayLightning,
You may remember responding to one of my posts/questions regarding the installation of a billet grill. Thanks for the tips. It made the installation alot easier (especially those metal clips that attach to the lower grill shell tabs).
I wonder if the "whistle" is more pronounced on the Trenz b/c it has more horizontal bars and smaller spaces between them than a Stull? Baffling...
