Post ? about TailLight Covers >>>>(1GoodCop/DAVENSA)

Hey,
I live in Los Angeles and just yesterday I got a ticket for having tinted tail-light covers. I haven't heard much about them being illegal, but I know there is a debate on them just as much as there is on clear tail-lights. I LOVE the way they look on my silver F150 and haven't taken them off.

My question, is this what they call a fix-it ticket? What's going to happen? I know I should take them off, but what'll happen if they stay on? Just another ticket or further action (Impound; as second violation)?

Thanks,
Alex T.

Take them OFF....They are against the law..they cover the reflectors...and you cant see the required distance according to traffic code...Read the back of the ticket, I would assume they may give you a break if you fix it...THEY WILL FINE YOU MORE FOR A SECOND OFFENSE...up to 500-2000 for a second offense here in San Antonio....They can impound you car for being unsafe and not being able to pass a state inspection...we can do it on the road..but the latter is very very extreme...I myself would change to something else....Dave

Why don't you just get the ones that slits in them so some of the light shows instead of the ones that cover the hole light since you got a ticket for them.

I've seen the way that looks on a silver F150 and don't like the look of it at all.

Another question: Is it illegal to have any type of cover on the taillight? What if the tint on the covers were lighter?

FYI on the fix-it tickets in California. They are no longer freebees. You do receive a small fine and you will be required to have them removed. Davensa is correct. The next offense will cost you more.

In the past you would just need to get it signed off at your local police station when it was corrected. Not anymore. The fine goes along with it too.

>>>>Unfortunately any cover that is tinted or solid and covers any portion of the lens is illegal here in Virginia. That eliminates just about every kind of light cover unless it would be transparent and I don't know of any like that. The ones on Steveo's and Dave's look pretty good, I don't see a problem with those, but they'd be illegal a well....later Patrick.

ditto on the illegal part here in WI as well. Law reads: "...All tail lamp lens and reflectors shall be installed and maintained in proper condition and may not be covered or obscured by any object or material". Although they are illegal, the lense covers on Steveo's truck are not likely to get you stopped. A sure stop is to have a tinted cover over the tail lamp lens.

Cool

First off, sorry I haven't responded, server was all screwed up for a while. Yep, here in Pa all tail light covers are illegal. The law reads in one section that as long as the "light being emmited is visible up to 500 ft. during regular atmospheric conditions." But the section right after that says, ABSOLUTELY no light obstructions, meaning, if it's not on there from the factory, ILLEGAL, here in Pa, a traffic summary is $93.50. It's true it won't pass inspection, and I can have it impounnded, but unless your sleeping with a cops girlfriend, I wouldn't worry about it..;-) And yes, even STEVEO's covers are illegal,as pictured, but those you most likley would get away with, because there is nothing over the light. But anybody with a flareside knows that these particular covers, block off the reflector strip that runs around and throughout the tail lens.
19-seventy ford...shoot, we'll try to answer.

Steveo, I'll try write me an e-mail, I may have to work.

F150Y2K, I would suggest strongly to take them off, it could hurt real bad if you fail to do so, not trying to be a d--k, but if he/she got you once, be sure they'll do it again. Just for the record, I'm VERY lienient with these inspection regs.

Cool

They're illegal here in Jersey too. Even the brush guards on the push bars are illegal. I have the same taillight covers steveo has, and they are painted to match, whick I think helps to "camouflage" them to the untrained eye. Now, I got pulled over a couple months ago for having a smoked license plate cover on my front plate (didn't have one on rear). The cop, of course parks behind me, really hassled me about it, I apoligized and told him I even passed inspection with it on, and they told me it was ok as long as it was clean. He didn't care, but didn't give me a ticket.... All the time, he said nothing about my taillight covers. I can only assume that he didn't notice them since he was razzing me so much about the plate cover, which I took off as soon as I got home.

Well I finally got the amount of the ticket. >>$77!<< As soon as I received the letter, I walked outside and took them off my truck. The ticket is going to get taken care of, if you know what I mean.
