Smile Painted Throttle Cover

Hey, everyone else is doing it so why not?

Just finished last night!!!

Painted the throttle cover with dark blue high-temp engine spray paint and applied a gold paw-print decal (my truck is blue with gold accent).

Hey, that's a nice cover Chris!! I've been thinking of doing a similar thing to my cover. Paint it blue, and then go over the lettering in silver.
What was the total cost of this mod? Just a can of paint? What did the decal cost?

Thank you both! Kelly, total cost was $3.99 for a can of paint (I got it at Kragen, but you can get the same stuff at NAPA auto parts and probably Pep Boys) and $7.50 for the decal (it comes with 2 paw prints). Just look for "engine paint", I think it withstands 500F heat and comes in about a dozen different colors.

I was going to paint the letters & Ford logo, but decided to just add the paw print decal and call it quits. I had actually painted it entirely gold, but it was too much for inside the engine compartment so I scraped it off and re-painted it blue.

Question

Is there any surface preparation needed before painting, such as sanding or priming, or do you just use engine paint right over the top? It looks cool!!

Jumpn, I lightly sanded the surface as the first coat I put on peeled right off (easily). Just take some sand paper and rub it all over so it no longer looks shiny, clean it up and paint!

The best way to clean& prep plastic parts is to use a scuff pad ( red or green) and use hot soapy water (dish detergant) ans scub the parts in a bucket or pan. This wil clean any grease or oil off and give you a great surface for you primer (must use) to stick to, allow good dry time them paint. Primer is a must because it gives the paint somthing to stick to and it also acts as a sealer if by chance there is a small amount of oil or garbarge in the item you are painting. We paint alot of plastic parts hear like bumber covers and skirting and this is what the paint company's recomend.
We also add a flex agent to the paint but that is not possiable if you are using spray paint from a can. Using sand paper can trap parts of the sand from the paper in the plastic leaving you with a less than perfect surface . Hope this help's there is nothing more annoying than to paint somthing and have it not come out the way you want it.

Also stay away from lacquer paints they cause some types of plastic to melt or get soft.
