Question SuperCab Side Windows

I have a 97 XLT SuperCab with the mirrored tint on the side rear windows. Does anyone know the cost to replace them with the 98s with the black tint? How easy is it?

97custom...

Aftermarket (any window bought from a dealer is considered aftermarket if not an original installation) glass is VERY expensive. Costs pennies to make these windows, yet the dealer makes out big time on replacements. Cost is very high. I had my slider backlight replaced (leakage thread) and couldn't believe the markup! It was around $350 for the glass alone. I'm in the auto glass business and know that backlight can be made for 10% of that cost. Anyway, the difference between your 97 glass and the 98 glass (mirrored vs privacy) is that they "dipped" the 97 glass in a coating that gives it the tint and mirror appearance. 98's are actual tint IN the glass, referred to as privacy glass.

Although my back window no longer matches my flip-outs, not too many people can tell. As far as you replacing the flip-outs yourself, it is very easy, three nuts and "bolts" (more like plugs--they are what you see on the outside surface of the glass) just screw together. The hinge looks like it bolts the same way to the glass, between the hinge and the glass you'll see where to slip your adjustable wrench. One word of caution, too much tightening will shatter the glass. Snug is good enough. This is tempered glass! Also, any slips with the wrench will scratch the glass. The 98 glass color is in the glass, so it won't scrape off like the old window-peel-and-stick-kind of tint. The window gasket is on the door of the truck so you won't have to worry about that.

Good luck, let me know what you decide to do. Sorry about the long reply...but once I start talking business..............

Dave

Thanks Dave,
Maybe I'll check out an after-market auto glass company. It is not that big a deal, but if the price was right and I already thought it would be easy, I'll go for it.
Thanks again for your informative reply.

Brandon

I've been looking to replace my windows also. Checked with two dealers-$350 per window! Yes I said PER WINDOW!I couldn't believe it. So I've been searching junkyards for the past year and haven't been able to even find one. It sucks.

There's a wrecked (front end damage) 99 sport extended cab at a wreckers down the street from me. I could stop in there and get a price for the windows if anyone is interested. Shipping and stuff can be arranged.

I don't know if any of you are in the niagara region, or if you've followed the weather up here at all, but we got over 2 feet of snow in the last day and it's still snowing, so it's a safe bet that I didn't get out to get a price on the windows today. I'll try tomorrow, hopefully the weather will be a bit nicer.
