Question Chrome differential cover

Another project? Perhaps!

Where can I get a chrome differential cover, how much are they, and can I install it myself or is this a serious operation?

Thanks a bunch,
Duke

Thunder, I went to http://www.offroadunlimited.com/ and they were all for the F-250 or higher. One, didn't specify which models it was for:

Ford Rear 8.8 - 1993 to Present
Price $134.95 polished $119.95 black $129.95 satin

Does anyone know if this is it?

LARIAT1, I'd love to find a cheaper plastic add-on... let's keep looking

The page you point to just takes you to another site. It says:

"Performance differential covers are available from Off Road Unlimited (telephone #818-563-1208)."

And "Off Road Unlimited" links to www.offroadunlimited.com/

Does anyone know if the existing differential cover can be chromed? What happens when you take it off? Do you have to re-grease/oil the diff.?

Cool

HI!... I have the 9.75 rear end in my truck and I was thinking of getting the cover ceramic coated. It looks almost like chrome but does'nt pit and you don't have to polish it all the time to keep it looking good. FOOD FOR THOUGHT!lol!

Thumbs up

OK, here's the scoop! Summit Racing has it, and it's just $29.99 ($36.94 shipped). It is purely a chrome "dress up" piece. I spoke with them on the phone (ordered online) and he said all you need to do is un-bolt the old one, and bolt on the new one.. simple procedure, doesn't require doing anything more.

The part number is SUM-G3877 and its official item name is "Summit Rear End Covers". Description is: "FORD 8.8 CHROME COVER W/HARDWA". Just go to http://www.summitracing.com/ and punch "SUM-G3877" into the search box at the top. I just ordered it and will let y'all know how it goes.

I don't mean to burst anyones bubble, but replacing the rear cover takes a little bit more then simply unbolting the old one and bolting on the new one. Mine involved taking the old one off, new gasket for the new one, puttting the new one on, and refilling the rear end. If you're planning a gear swap in the future at all, I'd recommend waiting till then.

Unhappy

Thanks Jason--I had a feeling that what he was saying may have been making it sound too easy even though he sounded very sure of himself. Still, I'd appreciate advice from anyone else who has done this!

Thanks,

Duke,
If you park the truck facing down-hill, on a very very steep hill (like a CLIFF ), you can remove the cover without having any of the expensive synthetic gear-oil running out.

With the bargain price on the cover - the replacement oil will far exceed the cost of the cover.

Good Luck

Cool

Hey guys...
I bought my chrome diff. cover from "Ford Motorsport". I have the 8.8 rear end.
It is "simple & easy to do".
Here is the whole process.
First, go to pep boys & get a $5-10 fluid pump. I got one that screws right on the quart bottle of fluid. Also get some high temp. gasket maker.
Buy yourself some good diff. fluid. I went with "Amsoil 75w-90 Series 2000 Gear Oil".
Also get 1-2 bottles of "Friction Modifier" if you have L.S. & it's good even if you don't !
Then take off the rear cover, let it all drain out, then clean the mounting surfaces & the new cover & squeeze out a bead onto the new cover & around the bolt holes & carefully align & bolt up the cover. Once you have that done, there is a bolt you remove on the other side of the pumpkin where you insert the pump tube & then pump the fluid into the rear end. Pump it in until it starts coming out of the hole. Don'f forget to put in the friction modifier which you can get from ford or most parts stores. Once it's full, you're ready to go drive it. NOTE: You need to go drive some "figure 8's" to get the fluid & modifier distributed throughout the entire rear end/axle. Now You're done !
There is "NO GASKET" on the diff., you make your own. Found this out when I went to the dealer to pick one up. The chrome cover has been on for 2 years & is perfect. You can get aluminum finned over capacity sized ones for $100+ but you don't have to spend that much.
Good luck to y'all !

Just to save you guys some trouble if the situation arises... I put 4.56 gears and ARBs in my '98 and tried 3 different aftermarket chrome diff covers. None of them would fit because the new gears were to big. Can you believe the factory one was the only one that worked. So, I got the factory one chromed...

Well, here it is... it started to look like a big project that I didn't want to chance messing up, so I paid a shop to do it. Unfortunately, my new Gibson split rear exit exhaust kinda got in the way, but it still looks cool

You can visit my website at

http://bloodog.com/#diff

...for a few inside pix I took, but here's the finished result:
