My Ford bug deflector was dull and had permenant bug splats on it. I wet sanded it with 1200 grit, buffed it with heavy compound on a foam pad, polished it with finess it polish, and then waxed it. It looks like new. If the shield is dull from scratches, you need to polish the shield smooth before wax. Wax does'nt buff out of the scratches and leaves the shield streaky and worse looking than before the wax.

my dad used a turtle wax rubbing compound or something like that on Sunday and it looks brand new, took those 'permanent' bug splats right off.

Novus cleaner and some rubbing compounds do work. Novus makes different types of cleaners (they're called I, II or III) designed for different kind of scratches. If you use the one for fine scratches (sort of like rubbing compounds) it'll sharpen one right up.

Here's a suggestion: There is a plastic window polish out there (Blue Coral, maybe?) that does wonders on the hazed back windows in convertibles. I think this would do the trick on the bugshield.

Good luck!

Cool

I have the Lund Interceptor on my 00. It didn't mount to the existing holes. Mine was clear and I painted the back, Toreador red. I also modified it to mount closer to the hood the default was atleast an inch off the hood.

These things are DESIGNED to take the beating so your paint gets spared. Spend the $40 when you need to.

Cool

In addition to the Novus product, Meguiars make a 2 step Plastic Cleaner/Polish that I use on bug deflectors. You have to use a good degreaser on them first to remove any oil and wax before you polish them. The Meguiars brings it right back to near new condition.

I had the same problem with my smoke colored Deflecta-Shield. Just for the heck of it, I used some liquid Turtle wax bug and tar remover that comes in a can (it has been around forever), and it worked. I recommend putting some on a rag and applying the liquid in a back and forth(not circular)motion over an area about 7-8 inches long and then immediately polishing this area with a dry cotton cloth.

I was in a racing shop last week ordering some Smittybuilt bars for my truck. They sell a cleaner for the Lexan windshields on race cars. I don't recall what the name was it should work bug deflectors too. I have to go back this week so I'll check on a name.
