Unhappy Cheap Cap

I will be making a trip soon and need a cap to secure some large items. I don't really care for caps on pickups. So, I want to do this as cheap as possible since I'll only put it on when I need security. I don't care if it fits perfect. It just needs to somewhat seal and lock.
Is there some interchangeability between our cap footprint and other/older trucks?

How would a clam shell car top carrier work for your items? Just set it in the bed. Locks and water tight. usually found for under $100. Seen it done before and looked ok.

As cheap as possible sounds like 3 and a half sheets of plywood and some 2x4's. As for security, if you build it right six men couldn't get it off.

Want cheap? I got cheap. It won't lock, but it looks like you've got nothing to steal!
