Question Factory Molded Running Boards

I was thinking about putting the factory molded running boards part # 16450 on my new truck.
If anyone has installed these on their truck,
I was wondering how tough the installation was and how many new holes had to be drilled to install them? Thanks, JD...

So far, I haven't had any problems with the dealers identifying the boards with that #, but I will make sure what I am getting before I take them home. I am interested in the same ones that you are, except for the regular cab model.
The reason I asked and you may want to check is that the dealer transferred me to the body shop and that guy told me there was about 60 holes to be drill and it was a 4 1/2 hour job. It just didn't seem right to me, but maybe the guy knows what he's talking about. I was quoted anywhere from $375-$435 for the regular cab model in oxford white uninstalled at a couple of different dealers. JD...

I would be highly surprised if any drilling is required. Well if you end up ordering and installing them before I do, please let me know if drilling was required. If I order and install before you, I'll do the same. Thanks.

I will do that. It may be a little while before I do it. I just went out to the new truck today and the radio/single cd player is dead, no power. I checked the fuses, but all is good. I can't believe it, the truck has less than 200 miles on it. I will have to make an appointment to take it in for that. While I am there, I will try and find out more about the running board installation. Always something, JD...

You're in for more than you know at this point. That part number does not describe one type of running board. If you go down to your local Ford dealer and he looks that up, there are at least a dozen different types of running boards. Here are just a few:
http://www.icollection.com/ Then click on "For Your Vehicle" | "Vehicle Accessories" | "F-Series" | "Running Boards" On this page they show three of the dozen+ different designs. Me, I'm going the Molded Running Boards at the bottom, but it will probably be a month or so until I get the chance to order and install them. But after that I will gladly let you know how installation went. Oh yeah, those prices are accurate. These things run from $300 to $500+.

I ordered and installed a set of Ford running boards on my truck (for pictures, just follow the link in my signature ).
I did the installation in about 3 hours by myself. No drilling! The holes are already there. Just insert the clip-on nuts and bolt the brackets to the inside of the frame.
Watch which direction you install the clip-on nuts - they'll go on either way but only one way is correct (they take a large screw driver to pry them off if installed backward ) I had some rather long boards, as they were for the Super Duty Crew Cab and it would have been helpful to have someone hold up the other end - but I used the shipping box to prop up one end while I worked on the other. I could have reduced my install time a bit with help.
BTW - anyone that installs these for a living will tell you that there are a lot of holes to drill, at least that's my excperience.

Just read the "picture" instructions. Pay attention to the detail about the clip-on nuts and trim installation. Take your time and it'll look great!!

Good luck. Check my pics.

J-C,
That is a nice looking truck!!! The running boards we were looking at are made a little different from the ones you have, maybe that is why there is no drilling???

Freezer,
I took my dead radio in today and they decided to ship it off for 2-3 weeks to get it fixed. I did go ask the price for the molded running boards $390, where I bought the truck. They told me an install time of 3 hours. I walked over to the body shop and spoke to one of the guys who installs them. He told me that half the holes where there and about 6 holes needed to be drilled. I think he meant per side. He said that I would need a drill that had a side angle drill head to do the drilling for the extra holes.
I then asked how much for the install, he said about $100. He said since I just bought the truck new about a week ago, that I should just talk to the salesman and he could probably save me the install cost.
I did talk to salesman and he said when I got ready to do it, that he would talk to the boss and they would work something out for me.
I kind of figured, the broken radio might be part of the reason they were willing to be more accomadating. They seem to be a good dealership to deal with, so far.
I haven't made my mind up 100%, if I am getting the running boards. I will probably know something for sure in 2-3 weeks. JD...
