Question Corner lights

I recently got the apc diamond clear corners to match my projector headlights. From the pictures of the corners, I was hoping the amber reflector was on the outside. But it is on the inside. I was wondering if there is any way to get inside the lens and get it out?

Thanks for the replies!

Don't know what to tell you....I think you're required to have the amber refector to remain street legal.... I have the same corners, and I think the only way you could remove them would be to open up the lense assembly and pry off the amber reflector. God only knows what's under it though and it would probbaly look like crap anyway. If you don't like 'em, bring 'em back and buy something else. Either way, I think they will STILL have the amber reflector on them.

Are those the only corners APC sells now(with the amber)? About 2 years ago I bought my clear corners from APC and they already came without an amber reflector. To be legal you have to have an amber reflector but I don't care much, my truck fails state inspection anyways. I say look for a company that sells completely clear corners if 'APC doen't sell the clear ones anymore.

To be DOT approved, Federal law requires the corner lights to have an amber reflector. There are companies that sell a corner light without the reflector but they state in the paperwork that the lights are not DOT approved and are for show or off-road purposes only. I have a pair without the reflectors on my truck and so far no hassles with the local police. I don't think most of them are aware the law exists.

As for removing it...sorry, can't help with that.

I think you can have a clear corner as long as you have an amber bulb. I cleared the corners in my car, which I no longer have, and I had no problems. I never did put the amber bulb in either.

I thought so to but that's not the case. True, amber bulbs are required by state and federal laws, but federal law also requires the amber reflector. I have the amber bulb but not the reflector so by federal standards my lights are not legal. I kept my original lights in case I got slapped with a "Order to repair" ticket. If they start giving me a hard time I can always put them back on but so far no one has said a thing.

Here is a letter posted on the NHTSA web-site regarding this issue. The following is quoted from the letter, it's the paragraph that answers the question about the legality of not having the reflector...

"Your letter recounts another problem we have encountered with this type of replacement taillamp, i.e., the absence of a red reflex reflector on the lamp, and possibly the absence of a red reflex reflector on the side at the rear. If the original lamp incorporated a red reflex reflector(s) and the replacement lamp does not (and a separate reflector(s) is not provided in the package), the substitution of the new lamp for the old one will create a noncompliance with Standard No. 108, as the vehicle will no longer meet the requirements of Tables I and III, which require red reflex reflectors and side red reflex reflectors. The same would be true for the front, if amber side reflex reflectors were absent."

What about the Silverstar bulbs that appear silver from the front, but actually light up amber? Does the law state that the light must appear amber, even when not lit?

I have the Sylvania Silverstars installed in the turn signals on the front of my '04. I hated the way the amber lamp looked when it was off. The Sylvania Silverstars look silver when they're off, but when the lights are on, and/or the blinker flashes, they light up amber.

Neither my bulb, NOR my reflector look amber when the bulb is not lit. Like I said, the reflector is not amber, and they are not amber on ANY stock '04. Surely Ford knew this when they made these trucks.

TUFF-
The Silverstars are labeled as being 100% street legal. The light just needs to be amber when lit which the Sliverstars are. I want to get a pair but just haven't done it yet!

Just wanted to double check. I think I read too much into it. Could be the 5 Jack and Rocks, could be that it's 3:30 am. Who the heck knows.

Thanks for clearing it up.

Tell the Hubby that they'd make a sweet stocking stuffer! I think I paid less than $20 for the pair and they're SUPER easy to install.
