Question what are my Steel Hood Options.....

Hi all,

I've been planning on getting the Keystone GHF-100 'double scoop hood' installed on my truck,

and as I talked to the guy who's gonna paint my truck he really suggested I look for a steel hood that I would like instead.....My questions are 1) to those who have this OR OTHER fiberglass hoods, how do you like the finish of it? does it look wavy and such or what? and 2) what are my options for all-steel hoods, just to compare and contrast and see what I might like?

thanks.

I think for the most part, you'll like the fiberglass. Lightning owners get fiberglass hoods a lot, and they seem to have NO problem with them. When you go to get it painted, don't go to a cheap *** place, spend the little bit of extra money for the extra mile treatment

The glass hoods these days are not bad at all. Issues can be pinholes, Wavy surface and air pockets between the gelcoat and glass. For the most part they are minimal. Steel hoods can usualy be scuffed and painted with great results where the glass will need some minor finish body work first. No big deal unless your getting gouged on the body work. I like that hood in your pic. Looks great!

I don't have a clue to your steel options. But I do know that Keystone is a major Aftermarket body panel company that serves most body shops around here anyway's.

Hey Steve,

I'm sure that if the issues were serious, the company wouldn't be selling as many as they are...no doubt their quality is very good, but I think I'm going to end up going with this goodmark hood and a mustang GT scoop:

I think it'll look pretty damn sharp once I get done what I'm planning, ya think?

I've done a bunch of glass hoods and never spent more than 3 hours prepping one out for paint. The worse i've come across is Carbon Fiber but only because they are trying to make em light and they usualy go sparingly on the clear gel coat for weight which leaves thousands of pin holes in extreme casses.

I don't know what to tell you, I like them both. The first one looks easier to get those stripes over. Looks like they would all be on the scoop itself where the second looks like the stripes will go partially over those front indintations. sp?

Those headlights on the black truck look good. Looks alot like the 04 Had me making a double take.

well on the first hood, the scoops are around 11" wide, so with the 5" center spacing the stripes would extend over the edge of the scoop area...on the 2nd hood yes they would partially cover the hood's indented area....

My other idea was to just scrap the new hood idea, keep my stock hood and throw a DGM GT hood scoop on it....

it measures 17.5" wide x 17" long x 2" high.

picture also gives a little perspective on the stripes

If only there was a way to make the stock hood functional somehow....

Yeah, it's called a plasma cutter Just whack into it! Is there structure behind that area on those hoods? A guy could sure screw it up by getting too much heat on that big ol flat panel.

Nothing will fit and function like the stock steel hood.

Stock OEM hood

Just for an FYI.............
According to the body shop at my local Ford dealer, the stock hood on my 02 F-150 is made from aluminum, not steel.
Just wanted to let you guys know..........

WOW, your right. I just checked my 04 and magnets don't stick. Turned around to the wifes 2000 mustang and it didn't stick to it either. I wonder if that started with the 97's? I remember doing body work on the older ford trucks and would have sworn they were steel. You know, major sparks flying when grinding etc.

If there are sparks flying when grinding, then more than likely it's steel. Take a piece of aluminum and put it to a grinding wheel. You will see the difference.
It's probably a good thing that the hoods are aluminum because of the weight saving principle.

But it does dent more easily......

Buckfu, check out my post off the mustang scoop install. And yes, all 150 hoods have been aluminum since 97.

Sled...

Nice truck Sleddogg. I see your post on the install...looks kick butt!

I guess I've decided to go with the DG motorsports scoop. It'll be pretty unique, and match with the plans I have going for the truck. Nice & Clean 'n simple.

Does anybody know of a way to relocated the windshield sprayers on a stock hood or an aftermarket setup to use?

To Buckfu

Hey Buckfu I have a whole lot of questions...
1. That front grille on the red F150 what is the name and where can you get it?
2. The Electric fans what do they do
3. What is the VTEC tailgate thing?

1) Not sure which red truck yer referring to..the one at the top of this thread? it's a picture from keystonerestyling's website, but it looks similar to what a lot of people have done which is take the grille emblem from a ford taurus and attach it to an aftermarket grill.

2) Electric fans replace the mechanical fan on your engine. They don't actually 'make' horsepower, rather than free up HP that is being lost due to the motor having to rotate the mechanical fan. it may also help improve your mpg.

3) The VTech tailight covers are simply some plastic overlays that attach to your stock taillights. instead of seeing the entire red taillight, they outline the 3 'bulges' in the lenses.

hope it helps.
