Question dyeing interior plastic....?

Is it possible to dye the interior plastic pieces? say I buy some part that is beige instead of the dark gray like I need...can it be done to a pretty satisfactory level of quality? or is there paint that can be used? thanks.

you would have to paint it since plastic is non porous and the dye will not take. first rough it up with super fine steel wool. but not to knock down the profile of the texture, your just trying to remove the glossy finish, dull it up so to speak, then prime, then paint. good luck

wow my first post....

just my two cents worth but I have had good results with vinyl dye on plastics.... did a a dash and a door panel... the vinyl dye actually causes a chemical reaction and gives some penetration into the plastics....

available at any Autozone, or even walmart now...

good luck

so is it more like an etcher, so it gets into the vinyl? that's cool! i know paint ain't that great since it could flex and chip, regardless of how much elastomers are in it. but cool either way.

i was wondering for those of you that have used the vinyl dye, does is work on the plastic of the doors, does it work on the smooth vinyl top part of the 60/40 bench standard seats (in a 98 F150), do you have to rough the surface up a little first or just spray it on? also what kind of results have you had with it, i'm looking forward to playing around a little. thanks
