Painted Bumpers

Hey guys,
I want front and back bumpers that match my black truck color. I actually ordered bumpers, got them, and took them back because they were a flat, mat, black, not a glossy black to match the color. I was wondering if the bumpers they put on many of the black XL model trucks would work on mine. I'm thinking of going down to the dealership and find out, but theyd probably charge me up the a$$. Do you think this would work?

Sounds like you're wanting XL/XLT "Sport" bumpers. Look in my gallery. Mine is a Sport, I just removed the stickers...

That's a NO on the XL, the XL is considered a 'work' truck, and comes in the flat black. You want the XLT 'sport' bumper like mentioned above.

I have an XL, but got the chrome option for it.

Alright you guys, so an XLT sport front and back bumpers would work? Im looking for the real monochrome look and chrome bumpers hurt that look. So do you think a Ford Dealership would sell these to me? Expected price?

Not an XL "Sport". XL Sport and XLT Sport both have body color bumpers, just different grills...

When you say flat black I'm assuming you mean just top cap on the front bumper? I thought all XL trucks had chrome with a flat black cap...

Before even going to the dealer, I would go to your local body shop and ask them how much they would charge to paint your chrome bumpers.

Ford has the most retarded prices, I swear they are so out of touch with reality.

I don't think it would cost too much to just paint your bumpers.

Good luck

I think I will do that. The only reason that I was looking at this route because I heard how difficult it was to paint chrome by looking at some other posts. But yes, I will definently check with a body shop first, because your right in how high they charge for parts.

Have you tried ebay? or the classifieds? or salvage yards? I think it would cost quite a bit, maybe as much as new to paint. They'll probably have to grind the chrome off, then smooth, then prep/paint...

I honestly didn't know there was an XL sport.

Yeah, when I said flat black I ment the headlight/grill part. We have about 8 XL work editions here around town, and they all look the same.

I have a 98 XL, and I bought it new with white painted bumpers.
I haven't seen many other XL's like mine, most of them have chrome bumpers. I think it gives it kind of a mild custom look.

It only cost about $250 dollars to get your bumper painted. I'd put some classifieds out for the stuff you need on this site. That way you don't have to pay dealer cost for it which will be way more that you would get it for on here. Alot of people switch there xlt bumpers for others covers so you can find them fairly cheap. Good luck.

Hey, it there any coating or cover that you can put over the paint so it wont scratch and get rock chips. I've been wanting to paint my bumpers black also(kinda going for the black out look) but I live in Nebraska were we have party's out in the middle of fields and I live 40 miles from school(round trip) and 20 of that is gravel, and Im thinkin it I paint it the paint will just get scratched and chipped off from rocks and weeds/little unseen cedar trees and wire

It I had them burry the paint in clearcoat would it be ok, or what can I use to cover it? thanks

Cool

I am planning to convert my chrome bumpers to black also. I went to my powder coat place and they suggested that I bring them the bumper and they will sand blast it and then powder coat it black. The powder coat is a good tough material to use on bumpers and grills. I have already done this with a chrome gas cap cover and it turned out beautiful. The cost of this will be about the same as painting my bumper but it should last a long time. If it turns out well, then I will do the back bumper too. I will post back and let you know.

Hey, Flats Man, you say you had a chrome cap powder coated, did they coat over the chrome or remove the chrome first? If they did it over the chrome does any of it show through? I'm thinking about having some door handles powder coated, and not sure what to do about the chrome...
