Cool Gauge Overlay Installed, Finally....

Well I've had a NR gauge overlay since Christmas, and finally decided to install tonight. Thought I'd done my homework, but boy was I in for a surprise! Who was the moron at Ford that designed the headlight switch pod for my '01 Screw. What a POS!! Took me forever to get it out, and in so doing created the only damage to the truck (gouged paint on instrument surround). Don't think I'll volunteer to do this mod again anytime soon, but I think the final payoff was worth the install headaches (well maybe ....). Let me know what you think.

Quality is excellent. Dash still glows with the same factory colors, but with more glow than the stock overlay. I'm still trying to get used to the additional illumination. Not bad, just something to get used to. I got mine from Performance Products. Just make sure you're ready for the install, it's a pain.

You put your needles back on in the wrong positions.

Take it back apart, and do it right.

BigDeal it looks great! How long did it take you to do? Do you need any special tools to do it?
From what i can tell from the before and after pictures the needles are in the same place. dave8311 you need to look at the pictures again.

Thumbs up

Needles are in the CORRECT place. On the newer 150's they drop down that low upon shut off. Sweet job! Big Deal. Any special tools needed? Ive been wating to tackle this for some time now, i think you just inspired me! And how long for total install?

A good 1/4 drive socket set with a 'long' extention handles the major portion of the teardown. You'll also need some Torx head drivers once you get to the instrument cluster. The five general suggestions I'd make if you decide to do a similar install are as follows.

1) This is a very involved job. It took me several hours to complete. Make sure you budget 'plenty' of time and go slow. There's a lot of fragile (and expensive) parts you can break if you get in a hurry.
2) Figure out what type of headlight switch module you have and how it comes out of your dash befoire you do this project. I found this part of the teardown to be a major PIA, since I got some bad feedback on how mine came out.
3) Once you get the instrument cluster out of the truck, wear a pair of latex gloves when you take it apart and install the new gauge overlay. The gloves will keep the oil from your fingerprints off of the new overlay.
4) Keep 'everything' very clean (I used compressed air to blow everything off frequently). Any lint, dust or other debris inside the cluster when it is reassembled will take away from the final finished look.
5) If you have a digital camera, use it. Take pictures of the needle locations 'before' any dissassembly. Take some pictures along the way to help you remember how everything came apart. And finally, take a finished pic when you're done to share with all of us!

My final thought. I love the finished look of my dash, but am 'very' glad I don't have to do this install again. Good luck with yours.

No, it's my bad...I didn't know they drooped like that, on purpose.

The hardest part for me, was getting the speedo needle on right.

What I ended up doing was driving along side my wife, talking on the cell phone to confirm the speed, the pushing the needle on while driving.

Then, I checked it at various speeds to insure it was reading correctly.

Do you happen to have any pictures of the new overlay at night? Or could you take some? I'm interested in this mod and I'm wondering if it will accomplish what I'm looking for.
