Mirror tape for mirrors?

I have the 99 muth signal mirrors... badly faded. Im about to tint my windows darker than the law allows.. and Im afraid my vision, especially at night will be compromised even more so than now. I think I remember seeing these somewhere, but do they make adhesive mirror tape for something like this? I dont have the money right now to dish out on some new signal mirrors, so I figured Id do this for now as a safety net. Thanks!

Andrew

I think there's a currently thread on having Muth mirrors replaced at no charge by the company. You might want to do a search. I can't remember which forum it's under.

What are you going to do, tape a new mirror over the existing one ?

If you get the glass that fits the mirror head, it does not have a smooth back on it, so it would stand out an additional 1/4 - 3/8", and look like ***** when viewed from the side.

If you want to try it, use RTV adhesive tape, it would hold about as best as you woudl expect, but look for the mirror to fall some time in the future. With the back of the mirror not being smooth, water will get in behind there, and slowly work the tape loose.
Eppoxy is another option, but will look like ***** also.

If you are buying new Ford mirrors ( non signal ) just replace the mirror in the head, and go without the signal then. You got the cash to tint the truck windows, and the cash to buy new non-signal mirrors, why put them on so it looks like a getto ride ?

If you were not going to buy mirrors to fit the stock head, just get some large convex wide angle mirrors and slap it right on the mirror in the head, but again what is it going to look like ?

im worried about installation. im not all that mechanically inclined, and from reading the installation instructions on the muth website, damn it looks like a pain to install them. And my dad went to ford to ask them about installation and they said like 115 per side for installation alone.. now thats REDICULOUS. Im gonna get quotes from different stealerships because I think one guy posted both his lenses were changed out for 40 dollars labor.

Don't let the instructions scare you off.

Unless you are the type to look for a left handed screw driver to remove a screw, they are easy to do.

Just take your time and it will go fine.

If you know lefty-loosey, righty tighty, then you can install the mirrors.

The other thign to look at is don't use the dealership, find a body shop.

The body shop labor rate for this should be much cheaper then the dealer's rate.

Just another thought,if you really don't want to try it yourself.
Think about getting the Muth mirrors, and having the body shop replace them, or if you don't want to apy for that, just ask a body shop to replace the glass with Ford parts ( they might be able to get the glass alone cheaper then the muth set ?? maybe )

Try fordpartsonline or fordpartsnetwork to see what the replacement glass is for your truck, that would give you an idea.
