Firewall Punch Though
Firewall Punch Though
Hey Gang!
I'm about to install an RF amp in my F150 and the amp calls for a 4 gauge wire for power. Is there an eash way to route the wire through some port already in the firewall or will I need to drill a new one. A 4 guage wire is large and I can seem to find a good access to punch through. Also, if I do need to drill where is the best spot on the passanger side of the firewall.
Thanks!

I had to run a 4 GA wire for my amps and there was a nice big grommet on the drivers side of the firewall. It's up and to the right of the brake pedal from inside the cab. Hope this helps.

That will help a lot. I was hoping to punch through on the passanger side since the battery is on that side and so is the amp, but I can go that route. I guess no grommet on the right? Can't get that lucky. Thanks again!

My cable runs from the battery down the firewall, under the vehicle and comes through a rubber grommet into the supercab section on the passenger side. No metal drilling! If your amp is mounted under the seat you can always run twin 8gauge wires to it under the carpet. Drilling holes in the firewall is scary. Don't forget a fuse at the battery to avoid arcing in a car accident.
Take a peek under your truck at the rear of the cab, there will be plenty of rubber grommets all over the place. At least one of them will be convenient. Zap-strap your 4 gauge cables to existing plumbing under the vehicle. Don't forget to run both 4 gauge power and 4 gauge ground cables.
How do you like your Dynomax exhaust? Which muffler are you running?

Thanks for the information. I do have a supercab and I will go that route. It makes it much easier to do that than drill through the firewall. The Dynomax system is great. I had a custom shop here in Houston to the install. They are true duals from the cats back. I have the turbo type mufflers that are a little quiter than the others, but with the FIPK it sounds and runs great! Better freeflow than the typical duals from the single muffler back. I had the shop tuck the exits just under the fender behide the back tires with custom chrome tips. Thanks again for the info.

hey JR, which shop in houston did your exhaust. how much did you give for it? i live in beaumont and there's really no performance shops around here that interest me. i figured id have to go to houston to get what i want. thanks in advance for any info.
I ran my dual #8 wires back behind the battery, past the multiwire connector, into the gap in the quarter and doghouse metal panels, via the quarter panel, and followed the antenna cable through the grommet behind the computer on the passenger side. Where the wires come near a sharp metal edge I wrapped them up spiral wrap. I had to enlarge the hole in the antenna firewall grommet a little, and then seal everything up with black RTV. Everything is now watertight and solid.
You can also pull a wire down between the doghouse panel and the firewall and pull it through a drilled hole in the floor drain plug. Just be sure to secure loose wires and provide grommets or spiral wrap anywhere near and sharp edges or bends.
