amp problem

I think my old sony xm-250 craped out. I have had it for about 10 years, driving front speakers. I put it to use last year to drive sub, in mono mode. I noticed latley that the sub would work then not work. The unit powers on, no sound. Can I just buy a 2 channel amp and run in mono bridged, or get a mono amp. I'm trying to save money.

Few questions for you.

What kind of sub?

How much power at what ohm load do you want to feed the sub?

Budget?

I connected my mp3 player directly to amp, no sound. Switch amp with a spare one , no sound. Looked at back of speaker, one wire was disconnected. Put back together, back in business. Thanks
