Reducng RMS to prevent damage?

I just got a kenwood 9014d monoblock amp rated at 900w RMS x1 at 2ohms. My subs are kenwood 3012's. Together they come out to be 800w RMS at 2 ohms. I put the system in tonight and it's LOUD at 2 ohms but I'm getting a burning kind of smell. The cones don't feel hot and neither does the amp but something smells like it's burning. How can I limit the amp to 800W? Or should I worry about it?

Are they new and breaking in? If so keep the volume down till the break in a little. And keep the gain down a little.

That 900 watts RMS @ 2ohms is rated at 14.4V. When your amp hits a loud beat, voltage greatly decreases to around 12V, sometimes a pinch less. Chances are that power isn't the issue. If I were you, I'd smell the subwoofer, particularly around the magnet where the vent is at the back of pole piece. If the burning is coming from there, then you might need to set your gains lower, decrease the bass boost on your amplifier, or reduce the bass volume on your headunit.

Set your gain correctly and use your volume control.
