It means you can bridge 2 amps together.

while we are on the this topic, i got a question. i got a Sony Xplod XM-1S amplifier, 290 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (500 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms). now im thinking bout getting 2- Kicker CompVT 07CVT122, shallow mount. now would these subs work good with that amp on 2 ohms or 4 ohms? i want to stick with that amp because its so compact.

I think it goes up to 240 hz or soemthing and i had it cranked the other night when my sub started to sound like ****, im pretty thats what messed that sub up..im guessin
I just really hope it didnt mess my amp up, the intsructions say that amp has a warning system when its pushing too much power and will just shutoff, and it has a bunch of fuses on the panel where the gains are..Its quite the amp. Really hope i dont have to get a new one thats forsure..Im ok for gettina new sub but a new amp, i dont really want...This amp is amazing
You don't want your subwoofer crossed higher than 80-100Hz.

And all amps have fuses, and most have protective circuitry. That amp is nothing special, you just need to learn how to properly use it. Take it back to the shop and tell them to fix it and set it up right before you break something else. After that, dont mess with it.

Wow i read up on that link amazing the info it has, learned alot. But yea my sub box i just notice is ported so im guessin the amp has to be tuned perfect. But yea it seems as tho when the deep bass hits hard, its like theres way too much air coming out the port. And while I was checking that out, I noticed there is a leak in my box, on the panel that my sub bolts to. Seems to be awhole seperate piece of wood for the front panel about a 1/4 of an inch, On top of the actual box. So the seal broke on this front piece and there is air leaking out of it. I wonder if this could be causing my sub to sound like ****. So im gona slue back and clamp it hopefuly it works better after. Either way im gona buy another sub, im pretty sure I did damage to this sub. So my amp is gona be Running 1200 watts into one sub @ 1 ohm. Well thats continous so my amp manual says. So i need a sub that can go into 1 ohm and handle 1200 watts? Anyone have any suggestions for a sub that can handle that and i dont have to worry about blowing?

And also Im gona try and connect my sub to 4 ohms and tyhat means its only gona be usiing 500 watts, im gona try that mabee that willl be easier on my alpine type R..Im gona try that out as well..mabee it wont sound like its gona explode when the bass hits hard, instead of using a 2ohm connection. Cuz @ 2ohm that sub is getting continuos 1000 watts..

the impedience is determined by the sub, not the amp. if its a 4 ohm sub, thats what it will be. when u add another 4 ohm sub it becomes 2 ohm, so on so forth. get u a new box and jl 12w6, or the premier spl sub, at 1 ohm u have to make sure that amp is stable, prolly better off to get a 2ohm sub if u arent gonna ever get 2 subs.

ah i cant belive my system..It still sounds like ****..Im wondering if its the line out converter? could i have screwed that thing up..I dunno I cant figure out why my stereo sounds like **** now..I stopped at the shop that installed it, and the guy said my sub definately aint blown..and i dunno it sounds distorted and what not a high volume levels lik eits blown. It sounds loud at low volume like nothing is wrong...Im really starting to wonder if i ****ed my amp up. Any way i can tell if i screwed my amp up. I dunno..Maby my amp is pos and i dont even know..Sucks, i do have a rockford power 300 rms or something sittin around i havent used for a couple years. Im thinking about throwing it in...Blah i dunno...totaly sucks..I even spent a few hours fixing my sub box so it aint leaking anymore, still didnt do anything. Helped a bit but not much.. Im just totaly dissapointed..I think that night when my sub smelt like it was on fire it screwed it up, but the stupid guys at the shop think the sub is ok, so now they are turning everything on the amp down to make it sound ok..The guy did that turned the gain to like a quarter, and it sounded ok when my truck was parked..sounded like ok. So i drive home and i couldnt even hear the bass as i was driving,so i turned it up just a bitt, and i put my hand on the sub and its givin her sounding like pos. And i heard this amp and sub JUST pounddd, like shaking plexi glass windows and **** with this setup like to the point where you g2 turn it down, its like the opposite now..so i dunno if it has something to do with my line out converter. So i dunno whats going on, but its going back in on friday...the guy is like ah your box is outta tune with the sub. and he also said there shouldnt be air coming out of the port like wtf, isnt that what a port is for..But it sounded awesome when i got it from the place when they first did it, but that mighta just been my virgin ears hearing bass in my truck finally..and now its just sounding like ****.
makes me so madd when i know this amp and sub use to cause havok, like it pounds at low volume but not high it just totaly distorts, and it use to sound bettter the more you turned it up. I wonder if a aftermarket deck would help..
Im just mad cuz i dont have the funds to buy all new equipment. I can buy a new sub, and I hope that would help, but im scared of ruining it...Like i said i wonder if there are tests you can do on the amp to make sure its running proper and using all its power?? i dunno im confused..cant figure out why my stereo is pos now..bugs me and i wish i could just fix it..

that is getting weird, too tough to call without being there. can u go to another shop and get a second opinion? see who else chimes in here, there are a few here that are well versed in car audio, troubleshooting, tuning.
if the shop says its good, and the amp puts out power, the amp is prolly fine, i would still question the sub, especially if it makes noise when loud
quit turning the amp up. they had it low for a reason.
for example, my hu volume goes to 63, well i have the sound tuned to 46 volume for loud bass, at low volumes the subs blend in.
what brand is that converter

Its an MTX i believe, The guy at the shop said it was one of the best you can get cost me 200 bucks. Apparently they said the cheap ones are junk, so when you turn your volume up the subs get quieter, but mine doesnt do that the subs definately go louder. WHich is good..But i dunno something just doesnt sound right..Im pretty sure its my sub, but it stll puts out amazing lows at low volume, so anyone who would hear it would think its ok..But you turn it up its starts soundlike shiiiiitt, especialy when your driving, and the windows are up all you hear is crap coming ffrom that sub..But when windows are all the way down it sounds way better but still the subs will crack out. Like before you could turn this sub and amp way up and gain to normal, and it would be rattling your hair and clothes would vibrate and ****, it sounded absolutely amazing. And it just doesnt do that anymore, must of went either my sub is partially damaged or my amp is screwed..so idunno, mabee it has something to do with more airspace in the cab of my truck so it sounds different to my likeings, mabee i need like a 15..Cuz i did have this setup in my vw golf and it was small inside, and wow did it ever pound. I dunno but i wish it was friday tomorow. Anyways I hope they figure it 0ut.. Im hoping i just gotta replace my sub..I do want to get one of those SPL subwoofers..By premier, they have this 3000 watt one that apparently is a world record holder, dam i want that sub...and by reading that link you gave me, is it true you can run a sub no matter what its rating you can run it with any amp without ruining it? Like i thought i read somewhere in there no matter how underpowered you run a sub you cant blow it, its just myth that they blow being underpowered..cuz if this is true i wanna get the best spl subwoofer they have..and use that..

the ohms matter, not all amps can run well below 2 ohms, dont go below that. with the sub. if ur getting a dvc sub, get 4ohms. if ur getting a svc sub get 2 ohms. if u plan on adding a second sub, get 4 ohms. too low of impedience will caus protect mode on amp.
bottom line if the sub crackles, throw it in the gutter, go buy another
or dont turn it up so loud, distortion blows subs. under or overpowered distortion ,heat ruins subs. if u get a 3000watt rms sub, and use a 1000watt rms amp at 2 ohm s, u wont hurt the sub, it still might not sound great. also u need to have headroom with the amp so u dont clip and push the amp to bits. amp more juice than sub can take= lower gain on amp= less distortion= better result
