Question Stupid question. But when do you need an extra battery for a system.

I am installing two 10's and a 2 channel 600 watt amp for the sub. I also just bought new door speakers and plan installing a 4 channel 400 watt amp for the front and back. Will my battery have enough juice to run both and when I start it up it not be dead? Its stupid but i don't know the answer. So will the original battery be good enough or do I need to step up to a Optima??? Thanks

OEM batteries suck. Get an optima.
It'll go out on you eventually even without the upgraded audio

Well duh....of course oem batteries are going to go out on you.
They are just like windshield wipers they are supposed to be replaced every so often. It is part of owning a car.

Total current draw of your amps looks okay. I would not waste any money right now. Your truck is going to operate fine for quite a while It is not going to just one morning just not start up...unless you have other issues. Eventually when your OEM battery fizzles out I would get a higher cranking amp battery and also look into the "Big 3" or Big 4" upgrade. These upgrades are really only valid if you are going to replace your alternator.

I would replace your alternator first before the battery IMO.

Bottom line ...unless your battery is bad now....I would not worry about it for a while. Eventually I would say you might want to upgrade to a higher cranking amp battery.

Stepping "up to an optima" IMO is slightly an oxymoron. Just get the biggest CCA in whatever group battery you have and be glad you saved yourself about $100 over that silly colored, gel filled marketed battery. That is my $0.02

you shouldnt have any problems with your battery just dont expect it to last long and still be able to crank the truck if you have the system playing without the truck running.
i have 2 1200w amps and a 500w and the stock battery stock alt. for over a year now without any problems when the trucks running and my a/c on and the system playing the voltage drops to under 11v when the subs hit when its cranked. when the trucks off it can only play for about 2 min and the batttery is dead and wont crank the truck. so just dont play it to long without the truck running.

When a fair sized capacitor acts like its not even there.

Yea, i've heard that go two ways. Their not supposed to act like a second battery. Instead, their supposed to Take most of the beating when it comes to hard thumpin power robbing systems. So instead of taking out your alternator, it will surge power from there. Will lights still dim? Yea. Will the affects on your power system be less? Depending on your Cap. I used mine for a while, but after I got rid of my system, I just used it for my CB radio. Does its job id say lol

i had a 20 farad and a 6 farad on a 3200 watt rms system and they did nothing to help out the aftermarket 200 amp alt and the 2 1000cca batteries the lights still dimmed and volts dropped to under 12.

A battery acts as a large capacitor when the vehicle is on. IT FILTERS AC CURRENT OUT OF DC.
