Amp for mid bass drivers

My current system:
Kenwood DDX812
Alpine PDX4.150
Alpine SPR57 (coaxial 5x7) front doors - soon to be on Ebay
JL Stealthbox (W3v3) powered by bridged pair off amp
Stockers off HU in rear doors - RIP

I listen to rock, metal, classic rock, and a mix of other stuff. I like it loud but accurate.

Today, I scheduled an appointment to get the mains replaced with a pair of Boston Pro60's. They are also going to install Dynamat, Dynaxorb, and Dynaliner. I have high hopes for this upgrade, but I am not sure if I will be satisfied with the mid bass.

My question: I am considering adding a pair of JL ZR800 mid bass drivers to the installation. He verified that he could install them in the rear doors. Has anyone here tried this setup? What would be a good amp configuration? Should I use the PDX for them and get a different amp for the Sub? Any ideas would be appreciated.

First of all, you havent given the type-r's a chance. They really need an amp to shine.

The PDX4.150 was all the amp they could handle. They just weren't accurate at high volumes. They actually sounded pretty nice at moderate levels, or with certain less complex songs, but at higher levels with some hard rock, they would distort and generally sound confused. I give them all the credit that a 5x7 coaxial speaker can be given, but I was just asking too much of them.

Any advice on the amp/mid-bass idea?

you need to learn how to EQ right. I can get my $5 OEM ford plate speakers powered of my headunit to blend perfectly with my 4 8's and sound very transparent... I hear too many systems with bloated bass and obscene highs I actually had to pull the highs down to -5 @ 10k in my truck and my mids are pulled down -4 @ 500 or 1K with a q of 2.0 depending on the CD

Deaden your doors and seal the holes. Midbass output will increase significantly.

Offense taken. Pompous comment with no attempt to answer the question at hand has been duly noted.

I actually have an extensive background in live sound work, and an ear for what music should sound like. The reason for my thread was not to have my ears called into question, but rather to draw from some of the experiences people here may have had with the setup I was considering, since I can't listen to it myself in a truck without buying it.

Thank you for the advice. The deadening job was scheduled along with the speaker replacement. It sounds like you are saying that I might be surprised with the Bostons once the deadening work is finished. They sure are no replacement for a JLZR800, but I might just give them a chance to try unless the shop offers me a price I can't refuse. Should that happen, I'm thinking that a nice single channel sub amp would free up a pair of channels from the PDX, which I would use for the mid-bass.

Are you kidding me? You have now not only tested my ears, and their ability to discern the difference between 2 very different pairs of speakers, but now you have reviewed my resume, and determined where I got my sound technician training and experience?

Your replies in my thread are immature, disrespectful, self absorbed, inflammatory, and generally useless to what otherwise was intended to be a technical discussion. That said, I find you entertaining. You are a teenager right? Not far from it I'm sure, based on your ADHD symptoms. Dr James Lehman has developed just the solution for your behavior disorder:

Beat it kid. No, you cant make $5 oem plate speakers sound like Boston Acoustics Pro60SE's, nor did you in any way address the question that was asked. Rack up your post count in some other thread.

Anyone here ever tried the JL ZR800's in the rear doors of an F150? If so, how did they perform, and what amp worked best for you?

I'm still trying to figure out why you think you need to install midbass drivers. I have plenty of midbass with my install.. so much so that I never installed the midbass drivers I bought for my rear doors.

He is actually one of the few here that knows and understands sound. And from my knowledge of Styx, he probably could.
