over powering vs under powering

im gonna be putting a 10" P3s fosgate in my truck soon and my roommate has an amp i could pic up cheap, the only thing is the sub has a higher rms rating than the amp can put out, even bridged down to 2 ohm. I can buy another amp w/ more power that is even smaller and easier to hide for a good price as well, just wondering if I risk the sub w/ an under powered amp

subs being damaged because of underpowering is a myth. it comes from the fact that most people who under power their subs are iggnorant n00bs and crank the gains way up because they couldn't accept the fact that their system wasnt performing to their expectations. what happens is the amp is now cliping because the gain was used as a volume **** and the cliped signal is what kills the subs. your best bet is to get an amp with an rms rating close to what the sub can thermally handle.

What he said^

Set your gains correctley and there is no problem with runnin a 300 watt amp on a 1000 watt sub. Hell, even with that 300 watt amp clipping to beat hell, that 1000 watt sub still might handle it just fine, but still, just dont do it.

So, just be smart with the gains, set them where they need to be and call it a day.

Seeing as I'm in college, i'll drink just about anything.

But if given the option to choose a nice quality brew, i like Blue Moon, Fat Tire, Sierra Nevada, Heineken to name a few.
