Installing AMP & SUBS to "Premium" Set Up
Installing AMP & SUBS to "Premium" Set Up
Hey I've got a 2008 F150 FX4 with the "Premium" cough Audiophile set up. I want to take out the stock subwoofer and amp and install aftermarket equipment. My question is what do I have to do to run an amp off the factory 6 disk head unit. I know wires are already ran to the stock sub and amp, can I work from there or does it need to be all re wired. I plan on putting 2 12" Solo Barics under the seat, and I'm not sure of the amp yet, just wanted to start planning ahead. Also, where have yall mounted your amps, I know under the front seats anybody put it on the back wall or anything? I know there are many other threads on this topic but I couldn't get a straight answer. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
AMPS-mount them behind the back seat on the back wall. Search the site for instructions to take the seat off, its a PITA.
SUBS-to fit solobarics, you will need a seat lift, and you cant use bigger than 10" drivers.
WIRES-that stock wiring is for 90 watts. Your amp(s) will most likely be in the 1000-1200 watt range, you must require it all to the battery with an amplifier wiring kit of some sort.
HEAD UNIT-to use the factory head unit, you will need a line out converter to transmit signal to your amplifiers.

They make 12" boxes on ebay with a 5.75" mounting depth that "supposively" fits right under the seat when you take the jack out. I know I'll have to run an amp kit, my only concern is wiring it up to the head unit. Are there RCA outputs? Or how to I do about that. If I need some kind of converter where can I get this?

Like i said earlier, a line out converter is how you connect the head unit. You splice speaker wires to get RCA signal.

No, the Audiophile HU does not have RCA outs. Crutchfield has harnesses that will plug into the HU's sub plug, and terminate with RCA connectors and remote turn on leads. http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...705521&tp=2977

you need a LOC.. i would suggest looking into the JL AUDIO " Clean Sweap" this will clean up all the nasty signals and frequiecies from a LOC and make it sound like its installed to a aftermarket HU
If you running just a subwoofer amp off the factory Audiophile head unit, you DO NOT want to use a line out converter. The signal off the headunit is already a low level output.
What I'd recommend is cutting one end of an RCA cable, and usint some T-Taps or some kind of inline splicing to connect to the sub output +/- wires.
I originally used a LOC on mine, and was wondering why I'd turn my amp up 100% and still didn't get the proper voltage on a DMM. Once I modified some RCA's and tapped straight into the low-level signal, I got WAAAAYYYYY more output, and the amp is putting out the correct voltage at only 35-40% gain.
With the audiophile HU, you only need to use a line out converter if you're running amps to power your door speakers.
