Another Amp Wattage - Power Wire Question

Hi Guys just have a qucik question. When you are sizing the power wire for an amp install do you use the total power available from the amp or the max power?

Ex. I want to install two amps

1. Polk C500.1 = 500Wx1 ( 2 ohms) or 975W total with a 60A fuse - but I'm only going to power a single 10" that requires at most 300W.

2. Polk C300.2 = 185Wx2 (4 ohms) or 850Wtotal with a 60A fuse.

So if I use the total numbers it = 1825W
But if I use the max numbers it = 870W

Thinking about using the JL amp kit that comes with 2ga. power wire and its rated at 700W to 1400W.

You would be fine with 2 awg. I have run 4 awg up to around 1,000 watts rms. Anything over and I would run bigger than 4. You are running less than 1,000 rms and using 2 awg would be great.

TELL ME HOW YOU LIKE THE AMPS!!! I am looking at doing 2 C300.2's and 2 C500.1s. (when i get the cash to get the spks...)

And the max is 1825 RMS is 870...

You go by amperage and length for determining the cable size. 2 ga will work.

Low_e_Red, thanks for the reply. I will post and let you know how I like the Polk amps. Unfortunately, it will be after Christmas because I'm not going to have time before then to do the install.

First impressions are that they seem well built and going by the birthsheets that came with them, they will produce more than they are rated.

An example is the C300.2, it is rated at 150Wx2, but my amps birthsheet rates it at 185Wx2. The C500.1 is rated at 500Wx1 and mine rates at 585Wx1.

The C300.2 will power a set of Polk Momo MMC6500 6.5" component and the C500.1 will power a 10" Image Dynamics IDQ sub in a sealed box. Using a Pioneer Premier DEH-P490iB head unit.
