Need help choosing an amp

Hey there,
This is for my 87 f150. I have very limited knowlege when it comes to car audio. I just bought a set of 6x9 speakers. They are pioneer 5-ways, they are 460 max watts and 80 RMS power. I know I should mostly worry about the RMS power.

I have 6.5 pioneer 3 ways in the doors, but ill just let the headunit power them. Now onto the amps, I need to get a 2-channel one, correct? Should I be looking for amps with a RMS power rating thats higher or lower then the RMS of the speakers? Any amp suggestions would be great also?

One more thing, my truck didnt come from the factory with back speakers, so there isnt a housing for them or anything. I saw they made boxes for 6x9s, so I planned on picking them up. Anyone ever deal with these, any bad thoughts about them?

I would seriously consider amping the front speakers before I would amp the rear speakers. Unless the 6 x 9 are subwoofers, I would power them with the head unit and get an amp to power the door speakers. The front speakers are much more important than rear speakers. Also, ignore the 460 watts and go by the 80 rms. The 460 is worthless. If you do want to amp the rears as well, you might find a good 4 channel amp, (around 50 x 4 or so). More power would be better but, that is a start.

IF your not to concerned with sound quality and just what to get a little bump from those 9x6's, then all you will need is a 50-75x2 watt amp for the rears.

However, I agree very much with Dconder. If it were me I would be looking for a 4 channel for the fronts and the rears.

About the boxes, nothing bad about them, just a nice little speaker holder. My buddy had a couple of them with some 6x9's behind the seat of his '79 and they worked just fine.

I took your guys advise and bought a 4 channel amp. Nothing all that special, its a Pioneer 60x4. One thing I noticed when reading the description about it is that the front and rear channels can be adjusted independently. Thats one thing that I liked about it, so I can turn down some of the power going to the 6.5's. Is that a standard feature for multi-channel amps? I wasnt sure cause not to many other descriptions included that.

Yes, separate gains for the front and rear us usually normal on mulit channel amps, although some only have one adjustment that adjust front and rear, while some have a gain for each channel (four on a four channel).

That amp will work just fine for what your doing.
