Who has Farad Caps and where did you put them?

I need a new amp wiring kit, and saw one at walmart for $80 that included a 1/2 farad cap with led readout..

Who is using a cap? I'm familiar with them, but have never had one. Curious if I should get one, with running two amps..

And those that have them, where did you put it?

Caps are just a bandaid if you ask me...they dont really fix the problem.

I've been looking into a BatCap and wanted to try one of those before I got a HO Alt.

Depends on who you ask...but, I say no...don't bother.

This is another reason I'm still a little sketchy on the BatCap. It's more a battery than a cap though.

I read a write-up from an electrical engineer/hardcore auto sound guy, and well... after literally 60 minutes of reading his insane testing, I can tell you with the utmost of confidence that a cap is a waste of money.

However, they are "neat" to have for cosmetic purposes sometimes when they have a voltage readout, so to answer your question on where to put it... just put it in-line, close to, and obviously before your amps. Some people only put it on one amp, I would run it on both, why not?

But all in all, they don't really do anything... it's quite amazing how worthless they really are

In my own personal "testing", I have had very good results with the batcap and no results with 1 & 2 farad caps. I actually had negative results with the 15 farad alumcap. This was with an spl car using a single SVR battery, a 225 amp altenator with an external regulator set at 15.2 volts. (pontiac computor is safe to 15.4 so we set it a little low just to be safe ) With no cap, a 1 farad cap, 2 1 farad caps we saw no difference in spl and voltage drop on a bass burp. The car had a 196 amp measured draw when burping it. The 15 farad alumicap actually dropped more voltage on a burp than without it. Xstatic sent us a pair of prototype 16 volt batcaps to try (what would be the supercap 100 today). The voltage didn't drop as much and we gained almost 2 db. I later used the batcap 300 (400 didn't exist yet) on a couple of problem cars and they definately made a big improvement. This goes back to 1999 and I have been using them ever since.

Your testimony a while back persuaded me to get a 400. I just haven't picked one up yet. I think it boils down to just being lazy and buying & moving into the new house.

I'll get around to it one day. lol

I was thinking about getting one of these caps.. They might not help, but I want one.. It's cheap and looks kinda cool.. I'll be runing a Pioneer 760w amp with 2 Kicker CVR 10's... Would it help? Like I said, I know it may not be the greatest, but it's cheap and looks somewhat good.. If not, do you know what would be a good one to get, for a fairly cheap price?

Link to one I'm looking at:

No, its not going to do anything. As said above, it could even hurt it more than it 'helps'. I guess if you just want it for looks and for a voltage reading it would work...

A cap can store and supply a short burst of power during a short period of peak demand. They will not fix dimming head lights or any thing like that.If you are into SPL you need caps due to the very hi demand during a spl run.A batt mounted under the hood cant react to an amps peak demands fast enuf. For that setup they work great but to the average joe they are just eye candy.A better place to spend money is on larger power cable and a good batt under the hood.

I have a 1600W setup and a 1.5 Farad cap and I can tell ya that Inoticed the difference. I was getting the full 14.0V to my amp from the battery/alternator at low demand and it would drop to 13.4 when the bass hit hard and 13.1v under total load. I took the cap off and it was getting down around 12-12.5V when it hit hard. The cap does stiffen the bass and add the extra punch if your wires are big enough all around. I only ran 4 gauge for my 1600 watt setup using audiobahn amp and 2 audiobahn 12's and it was fine. That system slammed in my Ranger, now time to move it to my 06 F150 excab. I hope I can find the box for 2 12's - I like the 2 ohm load on my monoblock amp, itd be a shame to only use 1 sub

If your amp is 1600 watts RMS you might want to be running a little bigger than 4 gauge...possibly the reason you were seeing voltage drops. Just something to consider
