Question Which amp?

I am planning on purchasing a Kicker CompVR 12" sub for my truck box. I plan on getting the 2 ohm sub, because I heard that it will give me the most power. I was also told to get a 4 ohm mono stable amp or 1 ohm mono amp to push the 2 ohm sub. I heard that the 4 ohm mono amp is the cheaper way to go, but the 1 ohm mono amp will give more power. Which is the best way to go and what is the best brand of amp (4 ohm mono or 1 ohm mono) to buy? Thanks!

To clarify, you want a 2 channel amp, capable of being bridged to present a 4 ohm load or a mono amp that is 1 ohm capable.

To be honest, the best bang for the buck is in a 2 ohm load. You could get the CompVr in a dual 4 ohm, wire it to 2 ohm final load. You can get almost any mono amp and they will double their 4 ohm power in to a 2ohm load. There are exceptions like the JL amps that put out their rated power at like 1.66 to 4 ohms or something like that. But, you can get several good mono amps that might put out 125 watts into 4 ohms but, will double to 250 watts into 2 ohms.

Hey, your a fellow Okie. I live in Claremore.

So you are saying that I should go with the 4 ohm sub and get any mono amp and wire each to a 2 ohm load?

I am saying get a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub. Wire the voice coils in parallel, + to + and - to -. Then just wire this to your amp. It will present your amp with a 2 ohm load. I do not know how much you want to spend but, here are a couple of amps:

Alpine MRP-m350 350 x 1 @ 2ohm
Kicker KX-400.1 400 x 1 @ 2 ohm
MTX TA3401 400 x 1 @ 2ohm

There are lots more amps above and below these.

The guy that I am buying the box from told me this:

If you get the dual 4ohm your only options for a ohm load are 8 ohms (which u do not want) and 2 ohms which is ok. The dual 2 ohm will play louder because it will see less resistance at the voice coil, also if you get a dual 2 ohm, you will have a better selection of amps you can pick a 1 ohm stable amp or above..

Everyone but him told me to get the dual 4 ohm. What do you think?

I am not sure what he is trying to say unless he is trying to sell you an amp. There are alot more mono amps stable at 2 ohm than there are that will run at 1 ohm. Most 1 ohm stable are from better amp manufactures and are pretty expensive. Good amps but, not the bang for the buck value of 2 ohm stable amps.

Also, if you want to go dual 2 ohm, there are alot of 2 channel options that you can then bridge to a 4 ohm load. But, still, for me, the best value is with a mono amp that will run at 2 ohm.

Alright...... dconder, I was planning to go with your advice witht the DVC 4ohm Kicker CVR12, but the guy I bought it from mis-labeled it. Long story short, it is a DVC 2ohm sub. Since it is a downfiring sub and a stock HU, I was still planning on getting the mono amp, but which one?

The Kicker website suggests odd amps which I cannot find (ie. SX7004, SX7002,KX6504,KX 3502,KX3502...). I found many KX 6001 amps, but they recommend that amp for 2 subs, and I'm not needing that much power.

Which amp (Kicker or not) do you suggest I get?

According to Kicker's website, the 12" CompVr is rated at 400 watts RMS and 800 peek. If you want to go with Kicker, I would look at something like these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/KICKER-KX450-2-2...QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com/KICKER-SX600-2-C...QQcmdZViewItem

Somewhere in this range. If you want to go with another manufacture, just try and find a 2 channel amp that is rated to do between 400-600 when bridged.

If you are interested in a kicker amp, I have an extra KX350.2 sitting around the garage that I can sell for $100 shipped in the US48. Email if you are interested to Rider69@earthlink.net

But, is it 1 ohm stable? If not, he could only get 150 watts @ 4 ohm.

My bad i got confused with the whole dvc 2 and dvc 4, switching back and forward. If its a dual 4 vc then get a dei 750d (80 bucks) and be careful with the gain, or look for a decent 2 channel amp to bridge.
