This is from one of my Acoustical Engineering books.

1db is a number, when x multiplied by itself 10 times = 10

1db (1.261) 1.26
3db (1.263) 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 = 2
6db (1.266) 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 = 4
10db (1.2610) 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.26 = 10

Example.

26db is (1.2626) 1.26 x by itself 26 times = 400

26db is (20db is 100) and (6db is 4) 100 x 4 = 400

Understanding db for sound
Our ears expand when it is quiet to hear detail and contract when it is loud.

1db = x 1.26 power change we only hear as smallest loudness difference.
3db = x 2 power change we only hear as a bit louder.
10db = x 10 power change we only hear as double as loud.

Audibly
Difference between 100 - 200 watt sound system, is minimal (3db)
Difference between 100 - 1,000 watt sound system, is twice as loud (10db)

Im not trying to argue... Im just spitting out what I have learned.
The thing being argued was your statement that 2 subs driven with 150 watts would be twice as loud as 1 sub driven with 500 watts.

Talking

OMG!!!

JL audio knows their stuff! This Stealthbox pounds. I only need the bass turned up to +1 with the volume up to about 21 and it makes your whole body vibrate! I can't believe its only a 10" sub. I'm gonna go deaf with this...

I had two 10" subs in a huge ported bandpass box in my other truck and it doesn't even compare (those were bottom of the line RF subs). Well my little, old RF 150s amp works very well, I am completely happy.

My setup pounds much, much harder than my fiance's. The only difference between ours is that he doesn't have a ported box because its and 02' F150 and he has a brand new JL e1200 amp!!!

The only bad thing was JL accidently shipped a gray box, when I orded a black one...they had the box labeled right, but they still messed it up somehow. So the stereo shop should be calling me today to let me know if JL is just going to ship another one, or if they'll pay this shop to just dye my box.

Besides that I give JL a very enthusiastic thumbs up!

I've been waiting for someone to chime in here with the obvious.

First of all the statement was made that 2 subs driven with 150 watts would be twice as loud as 1 sub driven with 500 watts. This is not true. The statement was also made that either doubling the power to ONE sub, or doubling the number of drivers to TWO subs will result in a 3 dB increase, which is true. The statement was made that this is hardly noticeable, which is debatable. But good deductive reasoning leaves one with this. 2 subs driven with 150 watts will be only 3dB louder than 1 sub driven with 150 watts, so how can it possibly be that 2 subs driven with 150 watts will be twice as loud(10dB) as 1 sub driven with 500 watts. 2 subs driven with 500 watts will only be 3dB louder than 1 sub driven with 500 watts, so 2 subs driven with 150 watts won't even be AS loud, much less twice so.

This was my point as well. I was only debatting the 2 subs being louder than 1 but 97f250 has it correct.
