protection light on

I just bought a brand new profile amp. I was going to replace the amp i have in my truck right now. so I took out the legacy and put in the profile and the protection light is always on. I check all my wires and they all seem to be fine. I checked all my fuses and they are all ok. When i unplug the RCA's from the amp, the protection light dims a bit, but does not fully go off. When i turn my key on, the protection light actually comes on before the power light even comes on. I have tried everything i can think of. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem? or could i have just recieved a defective amp? help needed. thanks

Don't take this as a putdown because it is not meant that way. Anyway, knowing who the manufacturer is on the amp it is not unheard of to have yourself a bad amp there. I have installed several of the profile amps back when they first came oout on the market and seen several bad straight out of the box. Not saying this is definitely the case with yours but it is quite possible. If you haven't checked already then make sure you have power and ground connected properly in respect to polarity (this will kill an amp if connected backwards guaranteed). Make sure you are getting adequate voltage on the remote wire. Make sure you don't have a bad set of RCA cables. Make sure that your speaker wires are corrected properly and that you are not shorted either to ground or dead shorted. Make sure you have a good ground. Basically, use a meter to go through all of your connections making sure all is in order. If all is right with the world then your amp is DOA.

i was thinking i might replace the remote wire, but i don't know what the proper voltage is for the remote wire to see whether or not it is producing enough. what kind of wire should i get for the remote wire? is there any special kind?

Cool

03stx -

Disconnect ALL of the speaker wires; disconnect ALL of the RCA cables. Leave just the +12V, Ground and Remote Turn-On wires connected.

Turn the key on. Does the protection light turn on ? If yes, your amp is poo-poo.

If not, you have a wiring fault (most likely a ground) on one of the disconnected cables.

Of course, this is based on you having the power connected properly. The remote wire can be any size; it is a "sense" wire and does not have to carry any appreciable current. Just be sure you have it wired properly.

Hope this helps...
