Question about channels

I have a stupid question. What amp is needed to run a set of 6x8 speakers in the front and a set in the back? Do I need a 4 channel amp or can a 2 channel be used and use one channel for front and one for back? Thanks and sorry for the stupid question

You want four channels. One channel for each speaker, not one for each pair.

mep, You can definitely use a 2 channel amp to power 4 speakers. If they are 6x8 2 ways or 3 ways just hook the 2 left speakers directly to the left channel and the 2 right speakers to the right channel. This will give you a 2 ohm load and will double your amp's power output, as well. Be sure the amp is 2 ohm safe and be sure to match the additional power with your speakers. One drawback is that you will not be able to fade if you do this. My preference would be to use only one pair of front speakers(no rears at all) with a nice 2 channel amp and add a sub to the system. If you do use 4 speakers, it would be better to use a 4 channel, but not mandatory.

I am not too concerned about the fader control. I have already ordered 4 speakers. However, I do plan on adding an amp down the road. I was hoping that I could just buy a 2 channel amp and run the 4 6x8 off that and then get another amp to push the sub.

Will running a 2 channel reduce sound quality or is my only draw back the loss of fader control? Also, I am not very smart on ohms, does that effect sound quality

Any recommendations on a fairly cheap 2 or 4 channel amp that still produces good quality performance? Thanks

mep,

distortion will increase when the ohm load drops. However, the good side to this is that if the amp is built to be 2 ohm stable then you will not hear the increase in distortion (although it could be measured with test equipment). In other words don't be too concerned with losing sound quality just because you lou load an amp to it's maximum potential. Just be sure to pay attention to how your system sounds and adjust gains accordingly so that you don't try and overdrive the speakers or amp. Again, I would suggest the 4 ch amp since it would be the best route, not to mention that the 4 ch amp will only be a few dollars more expensive than a 2 ch amp with the same power output. Therefore it makes more sense to spend the extra $10-40 and get an amp capable of giving you more configuration options. You never know when in the future you may want to go with a component set and bi-amp the tweets and mid/woofer.

What about for a sub? Should I get a one channel or mono or should I get a 2 channel? Crutchfield has a US Acoustic 2 channel 150 watts, model USB2150, for $149. Would this be good for a 10 inch Rockford Fosgate sub in a ScrewSound box? Also, are USAcoustic amps any good? Thanks

If you are using one sub just get a mono-sub amp.

I was suggested (at another forum) to do this setup:
http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/XTAZ1042FOR1 (2 for 1 deal, but you dont have to use both).

http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/148

You can put both subs on the mono-amp if you wish though...

I honestly have not ordered from them.

I was going to order some Infinity Kappa 572.5cf's from them (they have them for $75, which is really good), and I got the link from someone else.

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller5489.html

not much on resellerratings for them. So you might want to try sounddomain.com, crutchfield (which is very likely to be more expensive, but they give you all parts needed, so I feel you come out ahead when you buy head units from them, especially if you dont already have the tools or know-how).

I just ordered a Kenwood KDC-3022 head unit from crutchfield yesterday. It was $179 + 10 S&H. I should have it by next monday, but I am hoping to get it on saturday. Ikesound has the HU for $129, but crutchfield gives me manuals that are specific to the truck and how to install, any parts needed to remove the old one, and hardware needed to install the new one.

Once I save up some more money I will probably order those speakers and hopefully it goes well *crosses fingers*

I will talk to the guy who gave me the link and see if he has ordered from there before...

this site looks like it may be a little more solid:

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2888.html (not rated, but look at the reviews)

US Acoustic Amps

Mep- I'm Running a US Acoustics amp 2150 to power a 10'Alpine sub in a ported enclosure and it works very well. These Amps are well constructed, produce clean inexpensive power, and if you order from Crutchfield they will send you printed warranty cards good for 3 years from purchase. It's a good deal on a good amp IMHO. P.S. I also have a US Acoustic 4 channel amp powering my Infinity 572.5cf front speakers and It does a very good job too.
