What size amp??
What size amp??
More than likely i will be putting Infinty Kappa 61/2" component speakers in my truck. The rating is 100watts RMS. Should i run a 200 watt 2 channel amp or a 400 watt 4channel amp or what size would be best. Also i will be using Kicker 61/2"midbass drivers in the rear doors. They run 125watts rms. Can i use like a 250watt mono amp or could i use a 4 channel to power everything front and rear. Any help would be appriciated.
a 400watt 4ch amp will put the same power to the speaker as a 200 watt 2ch amp. I have had inginity kappa speakers b4 and they dont require that much power to play loud. There sensitivity is something like 96db i think. If you get a 4ch amp with 100watts per channel i think you will be fine.
Motorider, One thing about wattage ratings. They are not created equal. Most quality audio companies use conservative continuous power ratings. Lesser quality companies may use peak ratings or, in the case of amps, a rating with a high distortion percentage. A quality amp putting out 50 watts continuous at .05% distortion will reproduce louder, cleaner music than some amps putting out 100 watts with 1 or 2% distortion. And, in most cases, distortion is what ruins speakers before too much power will. My advice is to not compromise what you want your system to do for you. If you buy quality speakers, buy a quality amp, etc. We all place a different importance on such things, but if you really dig quality sound and you cut corners and don't build the system you truly want, you will regret it before long. Then you will start changing components in you system and will spend more in the long run than if you had just bought the "good stuff" to begin with. On the other hand, some people would be happy with a head unit and 4 coaxials in their doors. Be sure you do what you want and not what someone else wants. I have a Hifonics Z8000 5-channel, MTX Thunderform sub, 5 1/4 components up front(Vifa and Peerless with A/D/S crossovers), 5x7 coax in the rear for fill. I bought extreme quality cables and speaker wire from Audio Advisor. The sound quality is great and I have about $1200 invested. The bass is very much what it is supposed to be. Musical. I don't thump just for the sake of thumping. If it's in the music, then my system will play it. It's not a system for bassheads who want to try to impress everyone in the neighborhood. Good luck and good listening!
One more question that was not answered i will be putting midbass drivers in the rear doors so that when i add my subs i will have a complete 4-way system. the kicker midbass drivers run 125 watts rms and 250 peak. If i were to use a 400 watt 4channel amp and put 2 channels to the mids and highs and 2 to the midbass drivers would i be shorting the mids and highs? Should I use a seperate amp for for the midbass? Im trying to stay away from having 3 amps. Any help would be appriciated.
motorider, IMHO a 4 way system isn't necessary. The 6 1/2 kappas and your subs should adequately cover the entire frequency spectrum. Concentrate on the imaging of your kappas, add the subs, and you should be set. I think you are complicating matters with the idea of the kickers. They would simply be reproducing frequencies that are already there with your other speakers. And it adds to your amplifier needs. I suggest getting a quality 5 channel amp that has high pass filters for the front 2 channels(for the tweeters), band pass filters for the back 2(for the mids), and a mono sub channel. That will eliminate having to mount crossover modules and only 1 amp to bother with. Another option would be to use the crossovers and bridge the 4 front channels to 2 and gain a considerable amount of power. Just my thoughts, but ideas about system design are endless.
