Hole in Aluminum Rim

While driving my 2018 F150
on a major highway, my driver side tire blew, but it want the tire it was the rim. A quarter-sized hole was punched on the inner side of the rim. I have attached pics. What would cause this and is it something people have seen before?

Two possibilities if no damage to tire:

1. Rock/object/hard debris got stuck between the rotor/caliper and rim.
2. Defective casting.

Was it steer axle or drive axle?

To be funny... you sure you didn't shoot your rim?
