Features you may not have known about your 2015 -2020 F150

I finding new features on my 2019 F150 all the time, so I thought it would be fun to list some of them. Feel free to chime in with your own.

First up, many know what the + and - buttons on the shifter do when you shift your truck into 'M' manual mode. It shifts the trans up and down one gear.
Today I was wondering what happens when I push them with the shifter in 'D' drive. Here is what I found.

Pushing the '-' button with the 10 speed transmission makes tenth gear disappear from the display. Now your truck has is limited to the first 9 gears. Press it again, and number 9 disappears and your limited to the first 8 gears.
How cool is that. There are times when you're loaded down and the road gets hilly, or the traffic gets congested and you need to stay on your toes. In these situations it's better to avoid overdrive and stay in a lower gear.
Maybe that's a good time to limit the automatic gear selection to 1-8.

Pushing the '+' button turns off the display of which gear the trans is in.

8, 9 and 10 are all overdrive gears.
7 is one to one drive.

I think pressing '+' a second time does nothing because your at the end of the line. When I pressed it again, I noticed nothing change.

O course once you have pressed '-' three times removing the three over drive hears from the list, pressing '+' three times will put each gear back on the list.

Some things I noticed about this feature today on my family trip of about 125 miles. First, when approaching a long steep hill I can press '-' at the bottom, and climb the hill in 9th.
Second, it seems that when I move around in my seat my knee bumps up against the shifter hitting the -/+ button. I've notice in the past that the display of gears disappeared, and today I looked down and 10 gear was missing from the list. This could be a problem for me if it happens frequently.

Could you clarify? You first said that pressing + blanks the display - then you said that it enables the next higher gear. Does it actually do that, then if you press it after 10 is re-enabled, then it blanks?

This should clear it up. Lets say your going to down, but have not had your coffee yet

Start the truck the display is off.
Back up the display is off
Put truck in drive and now the display comes on displaying all ten gears

'+' blanks out the display
'+' turns display on
'+' blanks out the display
'+' turns display on
'-' brings the display back
'-' removes 10th gear
'-' removes 9th gear
'-' removes 8th gear
'+' restores 8th gear
'+' restores 9th gear
'+' restores 10th gear
'+' blanks out the display
'-' turns display on
'-' removes 10th gear
'-' removes 9th gear
You stop for coffee and put your truck in 'P'ark display goes off
You get your coffee, put the truck in 'D'rive and now the display comes on displaying all ten gears again

I would say taking the truck out of 'D' resets everything.

Feature number two.

The keyless entry remote is a great unlock and start your truck without taking the key fob out of your pocket, but do you know what to do if the battery goes dead on the only key fob you have with you?
Unlocking the truck is easy to solve if you have keyless entry panel on the door, and you can always use the old school key in the fob to unlock the door, but did you know the key fob will not start the truck if the battery is dead?
The solution is easy if you know what to look for. Every truck has a key fob chip reader that will read the chip in the key fob even when the batter is dead or missing. Below is a picture of the location on a 2019 with captain chairs.
Your truck may be different, but if you have the keyless entry remote, you have one some where. Drop the key fob in the slot, and the truck will start so that you can drive to the hardware store for a new battery.

Reads the chip even if the battery in the key fob is dead.

Works the same way with the 3.3L and six speed. Couldn't figure out two days ago why the gear display showed up on the right side of the screen. Had to get the manual out of the package.
