Help with my truck

OK, I had a post in power train, not sure why is was removed so I will post it here.

I have a 2017 F150 with 19500 on it. The wife and I took a road trip roughly about 5 hours round trip. I noticed what I like to refer to as old school gear whine, I started backing out of garage today onto the road way heard a grinding noise only to be described as something metal being washing up into the ring and pinion. the video catched the noise at the 28 second mark. The noise is even worse when truck in actually driving or in reverse. Dealer is about 25 minutes away.

did my clutch pack or bearing take a *****. Hopefully the dealer wont take long to find out what the issue is and have a quick turn around time.

Think I can limp this to the dealer?

I was able to limp it to the dealership today, wasn't sure if it would make it. It even starting making even more noise and some new noises. I think the rear diff is shot. waiting to see what they say.

Does the truck have the locking differential on it? If it does. make sure your wife or yourself didn't accidentally engage it while driving on paved roads. Just a thought.

yeah I checked all that. Nothing turned on, I even turned it on and back off again

On that note, dealership just called saying rear end is destroyed, somehow water was getting in and trashed the whole rear end....service manager stated a seal somewhere had let water in. they also checked front differential no issues noted there.

Service manager stated that ring, pinion, bearings all trashed.

I am scratching my head now, my case has been submitted to ford waiting for approval to fix.. really the truck has 19500 miles on it. wtf

Truck has been in the shop for replacement of the rear window for a bad defroster, bad apim and now this....

Do you drive off road? The vent line may have been knocked off and water got in that way but the dealer mechanic should have noticed that and told you.

I have had my truck in 4 wheel drive maybe 6 times since I bought it. We have had alot of rain in the area but I nothing that I can think of to do this.

I'm at a loss.

worst part is waiting to for ford to give the dealership the ok to fix it.

Got a call from dealership, all ford said is looks like water got into it. Here is pics service manager sent me.

It doesn't look like there was much of a seal around the pumpkin, he is also looking at the vent tube to see if it is positioned in a way it could possibly catch water.

I don't think the gasket surfaces should be rusting like that. Water may have gotten past the gasket? I think Ford uses silicone for gasket material on these and in my opinion, it's a bad idea. Looks like they forgot to use the silicone at all. Just rambling.

If you look at the cover there isn't much of a seal on it. seal likely that is how the water may have gotten in. Seems like a lack of seal and any type of RTV from factory may had led to the demise of that rear end.

As much as they charge for these trucks, they need to invest in a little better parts and attention to detail.

Well,

Keeping everyone up to date, Called the dealer last week to see if they had taken the rear end apart in my truck just to make sure nothing else was damaged, while parts where still coming in to fix the rear differential. I was told then not to worry nothing else should be wrong...

I received a call from the service manager today.. you ready for it.... yep you guess it. The case also has damaged race from the pinion...

The service manager did apologized and his words where " I am eating crow" when I asked if they could take the rear end apart to make sure nothing else was damaged. He also stated he was sorry for not listening to my concern.

New case was ordered today, Has to come freight do to the weight... He was thinking They may have it by next week..

I am trying to stay positive, but starting to get frustrated at the same time.

rant over!

So a follow up rant, am I in the wrong for asking if dealership had a tech that knows how to set up a rear diff and check the backlash? Would I also be wrong for asking for a 4 wheel alignment since they are completely replacing the rear end, I know the rear end has pins but, even with pins seems like the thrust angle could be a little off if not being careful.

Well, I was able to pick my truck up today, Completely new rear end, gears, electronic locker, ring, pinion, bearings, seals, case, etc. just happy to have it back. Took an extra day, they had to ordrer different shims to get the backlash set right, then do a 4 wheel alignment to adjust the thrust angle.

That truck has dealer trade written all over it. If you could check the history prior to your dealer selling it to you I will put
good money on the line that it was on a dealer’s lot that flooded due to a severe winter storm or hurricane. Think I am kidding? A few of the LA BMW dealers sold 733i’s that developed the strange habit of occasionally spewing dust/unidentifiable debris out of the dash vents. It was finally determined that all of the cars in LA county that suffered from this malady had been dealer traded from eastern WA and OR dealers. Remember MT. Saint Helens? Yep, it happens more often than you would think.
