Non Ethanol 87 octane vs Ethanol 93 octane
I am almost 4 months into my 2019 2.7L ecoboost XL. I absolutely love driving this truck. I drive mostly in a rural area so I don't do much stop and go and also not much highway driving. I have been averaging 22mpg and can go 2 weeks between fill ups. My old 2004 5.0L would get 14.5mpg and I would have to fill up at least 3 times a month. So I am basically saving a fill up per month. Gas where I am in South Carolina is running $2.27/gallon for 87 octane with 10% ethanol. The 87 octane non ethanol is running $2.89/gallon. My question is this. Would I be better off getting the 87 octane non ethanol which is not a top tier gas station...... or......getting 93 octane with 10% ethanol from a top tier gas station? I know the engines now-a-days are more equipped to handle the ethanol but I haven't found any documentation for a good fuel cleaner for turbo engines. I apologize if this has already been discussed. Thank you.
Your most economical option would be 87 octane with ethanol from top tier, unless you are towing - then I'd use 93.. Gas mileage and performance with all 3 options wouldn't be significantly different, but it should be a bit better with 93 - but not worth the extra cost.
Non Ethanol gas has far more BTUs per gallon vs ethanol gas. In their raw form, 115,000 for raw gas vs 76,000 for ethanol. So there's more energy to be had in the non ethanol gas. I've run Gulf Racing (100 octane) non ethanol in my 3.7 V6 and it makes a huge difference in my particular engine. A Supercrew with 3.73 gears and 275/55/20 wheels and tires, I can literally boil smoke from the tires in first gear, and carry it about half way thru second gear. Most folks that have ridden with me using the non ethanol gas think it a 3.5 EB engine. Pretty dramatic difference....in my engine. Might not make any difference at all in yours. I put some in the wifes 2.0 EcoBoost that makes 255HP in her version. Gas mileage was a little better and the engine more responsive but otherwise, not much difference. You'll have to run the non ethanol to see how it performs in your truck. As far as I know, there are only 2 makers of non ethanol gas and both are top shelf blenders. I would ask at the "non top tier" station about the brand they are selling. Green Technologies and Gulf are planning on removing our corn fed gasoline from the market. They originally started with non ethanol gasolines for the marine industry where the ethanol literally sucks water out of the air causing major headaches with the engines. They have since moved into other markets, one of which is Walmarts Murphy Gasoline. You'll also find some of their gasolines marketed as Shell Premium Non Ethanol. I'd give it a try and then compare fuel mileages and cost per mile to run non ethanol. While the adventure cost me nothing but the time to put it in the tank, even though my truck runs like a banshee using it, gas mileage is not much better. Most of that is probably because I can't keep my foot out of it. So it's not economically feasible for me.
